The Fed's Have Spoken- Duck Season

Postby webfoot » Tue Aug 21, 2001 1:22 pm

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will propose to retain most season
lengths and bag limits used last year for the upcoming 2001-2002 waterfowl
season
, in light of spring breeding surveys conducted in the northern U.S.
and Canada that found populations of breeding ducks to be down slightly
from last year, but still above their historic averages.

Mississippi Flyway- (Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky,
Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and
Wisconsin)

Ducks- Hunting seasons of not more than 60 days (20 days for canvasbacks)
between September 29, 2001, and January 20, 2002. The proposed daily bag
limit is six and may include no more than four mallards (two hens), three
mottled ducks, three scaup, two wood ducks, two redheads, one black duck,
one pintail, and one canvasback. The proposed daily bag limit of mergansers
is five, only one of which may be a hooded merganser.

Seasons in the states of Mississippi, Alabama and Tennessee may extend to
January 31, 2002. The season lengths will be reduced to 51 days throughout
the State.

Geese- Seasons for Canada geese may be held between September 29, 2001, and
January 31, 2002, and vary in length, among States and areas, with daily
bag limits varying from one to three. Generally, states may select seasons
for light geese not to exceed 107 days with 20 geese daily between
September 29, 2001 and March 10, 2002; for white-fronted geese not to
exceed 86 days with a two-bird daily bag limit or 107 days with a one-bird
daily bag limit between September 29, 2001, and February 17, 2002; and for
brant not to exceed 70 days with a two-bird daily bag limit or 107 days
with a one-bird daily bag limit between September 29, 2001, and January 31,
2002. There is no possession limit for light geese.
