Dog question - limber tail???

Postby Drake » Wed Oct 01, 2003 2:33 pm

When I went to feed Drake yesterday morning, his tail was wagging but the bottom portion was limp or limber. At lunch, I went home and checked on him again. When it was still that way, I took him to the vet thinking it may be his anal sacs needing the pressure released (ain't the internet great). Anyway, the vet said his anal sacs were fine, but he didn't know what was wrong. He gave me some antibiotics and told me to give it a few days. I'm not the kind of person that likes to be told not to worry about it - it'll probably go away in a few days (especially when it has to do with Drake's health). So, I did a little more research. I found the following about limber tail syndrome at http://woodhavenlabs.com/coldtail.html I was wondering if any of you have ever experienced anything like this while training your dogs or after a hunt test? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Drake, my lab fell backwards off of a tailgate, landing on his tail, bending it back over his back.

His tail was limp for 2 weeks and is now fine... However this was the entire tail ( Root to Tip )

Just wanted you to know that tail trouble can arise as " Result of an injury ", and may correct itself in time !

Wish you and Drake the best !

Drake the antibiotics will probably take care of it. You could add one 1) viagra to his dry dog food. I wish you the best

I really dont think the antibiotics are going to help the tail. Anyway, my dog had this problem once and it went away. Actually she had it twice and it got better both times. Antibiotics? Quack doctor?

Mine got into fire ants one time last winter. Wouldn't even wag her tail the first day. Her tail gained more movement as the days passed. 3-4 days and she was normal again.

I think goosebruce was right on it. I've never had it happen to one of my dogs, but it did to a friend. His wife shows Labs, I know that just don't seem right, but anyway. She wet the dog down before a show and the water was really cold. The dogs tail went limp, especially the back half. The cure, she stuck Preparation H up his butt and the tail came back shortly thereafter.

I wouldn't tell yur old lady you got a case of the drag ass! No telling whut'd she do to ya!

First time I saw it on my old dog it scared the crap out of me. Only thinh you can think of, is what did I do to her tail? I had read an artical in RJ a few months before that is the only reason i didn't freak on it.

Water doesnt have to be cold, so I dont really know why they call it cold water tail. Seems to happen with a wet dog that is crated a ways after working. travis
