Headed to Texas *added the video

Postby duramax » Thu Apr 28, 2011 2:26 pm

Well I'm headed to the Texas panhandle tonight. Hunting Friday thru Sunday. Thankfully no fires up that way, but it's still crazy dry. The other 2 groups that hunted the property said the birds were still very henned up 2 weeks ago. It's been super windy too. The weather looks crazy for this weekend with it being almost 90 degrees and windy tomorrow, and a high of 57 on Sunday. We'll see how she goes.

I'll post some pics when I get back.

I was out there in the Fort Stockton/Bakersfield area last week hunting and to say the least it was extremely hot and the birds where still with the ladies. I was about 75 miles straight south of Odessa. I did not hear the first gobble in the 3 days I was there, but did see birds strutting and I did kill 1 last friday afternoon and 30 minutes later killed a 6 foot Western Diamondback Rattler.

Good luck....

First day had shown 90 degree temps, 30mph sustained winds with gusts up to 40, and a lot of walking. Twice this morning I've been about to set up on a gobbling bird only to jump a group of deer that blew and ran right where the birds were and spooked them. It's been frustrating.

Just got back from around Falls City which is close to an hour south of San Antonio and 4 of us killed 7 in 3 days., including my Granny.
Stilled had a lil honey on there mind but they must have had an unbelievable hatch the last 2 years. I've been the last 4 years and i've never seen it like this, when we called up birds it would be anywhere from 3 to 15 toms and jakes. I bet there hatch this year sucks. It aint nothing but dir, no vegetation anywhere.
Never had it so good!

Well it it was a crazy trip. Friday was a bust. Set up on a couple birds in the morning but deer messed me up. My dad had 2 oportunities but both times they hung out around 60 yards since they were with hens.
Saturday was a different story. My dad tripled on gobblers about 30 minutes after sunrise. I set up on a small group 30 minutes later and doubled. 1 absolute monster gobbler with serious hooks, and a bearded hen. Sun was in my face so all I could see was that it had a long beard.
Saturday afternoon my dad shot a Jake to finish his limit. I moved to where he was and shot a Jake and a 2 year old gobbler.
Crazy how 1 day can change everything. We were frustrated and had low hopes for Saturday and low and behold, we got our 8 birds in one day.
Pictures and video to follow.

My double on the gobbler and bearded hen.

She had a 7" beard. Longest one I've ever seen one have.

Just him:

His 1.5" hooks

My dads triple:

I checked out the tornado shelter on the property and found this guy hanging out:

We didn't get pictures of our last 3 birds but should get a still of me holding the two jakes from the video.
Should finish the video from the trip by this weekend.
