So are we a confederate general, a black bear, or a shark?

Signed,

Well, "Bully" the Bulldog, oh simpleton among creative originators,

we are, and shall remain, the Ole Miss Rebels (also referred to by MSU as the "Mississippi Rebels" or "the School Up North --TSUN").

Yes, we have a black bear named "Rebel" who serves as an on field mascot primarily for the kids (don't blame me, it wasn't my call), after having retired Colonel Rebel (yet again, not my call). And we have a defensive unit that unofficially calls itself the "Landsharks", utililzing the "fins up" sign after a big play (originated for use in football by former Ole Miss football player Tony Fein, RIP). The Landshark deal was quite popular during the 2008 and part of the 2009 seasons, but lost its mojo during the 2010 and 2011 seasons for obvious reasons. By mid-2012 season, our D got its mojo back.

As you so astutely pointed out, the Ole Miss Rebels are not alone in the SEC in having multiple personalities: The Auburn Tigers have a Tiger mascot, a War Eagle mascot, and are often referred to as the Plainsmen. Additionally, there are the Tennessee Volunteers with a frontierman/Davy Crockett mascot and Coon Dog mascot named "Ol Smokey". Then you have the Alabama Crimson Tide who uses a red elephant for a mascot, worships a "bear", and brings Tide detergent boxes and rolls of toilet paper to games. The LSU Tigers have a Bengal Tiger for a mascot, and once had a defense referred to as the "Chinese Bandits" (along with Col. Rebel, I suspect that this is no longer considered politically correct). Even the apparently simplistic MSU Bulldogs with a bulldog mascot named "Bully" has its complexities, by the tradition of ringing cowbells, which has absolutely nothing to do with a bulldog.

So class, that is the end of the SEC mascot history lesson for today. After this season, no one will need a lesson on the Ole Miss "Landshark" defense. The feeding frenzy is coming to a stadium near you.

Stitch, this is football, a violent sport not for the squeamish.

Is there any motion or gesture or other show of emotion on the field by a player after a big play that you would consider "class"? Just wondering. I seem to recall another certain team located to the southeast of Oxford, that shall remain unnamed, that enjoys exhibiting a lot of hand motions and other displays of emotion on the field.

If you want "class", I suggest that you stick to watching golf, equestrian competitions, badminton on the estate grounds, polo, sailing races, or pedigreed dog shows.

I know.......I just love using the "no class" line since that is all I have heard from Mississippi Bear fans for the last 25 years (since I moved to Mississippi).......but to watch the Bears defend Henderson last basketball season was a pleasure to watch.....I get it.....just wish most Bears could admit it :-).....just pushing buttons......pot / kettle

Mudsucker, I am informed that Ole Miss now owns the trademark on "Landsharks" for use in football. Jimmy's trademark of the term applies only to beer. The term originated with a Saturday Night Live skit back in the late 70s/early 80s.

I think Jimmy will be ok. His beer sales in MS have jumped pretty high, spiking on certain Fall Saturdays.

Why are they showing water sharks when they are insinuating the mascot is a land shark?

The mythical " Landshark " rules the land, sea, and air ( eg Sharknado). It's one BAMF shark.
