Truly a rookie looking for pointers and tips on waterfowling
Re: Truly a rookie looking for pointers and tips on waterfow
be patient, dont crowd, shoot decoying ducks (no sky busting), most important, when you find birds, try to set up a close to spot where they are, put out a few decoys, keep your face down, dont move and let them come to you. about two weeks after season ends, start scouting. ducks will be settling in to the places they like. always remember, most good duck hunters learned the hard way, the sooner they think your willing to work for the hunts, the more they will share the info. talk with the older hunters, once you get them talking, they will reveal good information. the harder you work to get good the more youll apreciate the hunt1 my 2 cents

Do you have stickers on your truck yet? That's very important. It doesn't really matter what they are, as long as you have a bunch of them. And probably need to pick up a Yeti too. It's a must for duck hunting.

use google maps it will help finding the open areas and the hidden ones that nobody likes walking to. That's how I found my honey hole that I have to myself. after last year coming out with limits the guys were asking me how did I get the greenheads I laughed and told them I worked. Dux Be Us is a good guy for tips and such. I had the enjoyment of hunting with him one time and man was that an experience lol. all the tips given are a must besides the yeti cooler and all the face paint joke. You will see when season comes how much they make fun of the black paint. Just keep your head down and don't look up use the reflection off the water to watch them pass over your head. Don't call a lot later in the season. If you don't see any ducks I usually wake or give out a hail call every now and then in case some are in the air and I just don't see them cause they can hear you and might turn to see what the fuss is about. I don't think they said anything about decoy setup. I usually use a J setup. Here is a scenario. The wind is coming from the North meaning north to south. North is at your back the curly part of the J should be the furthest away. the ducks will land in the pocket hopefully of the J. if you don't understand let me know I will just email u a pic of how it looks. I have also seen a wedge work or if your in timber just put them in the wooded part cause they like to land where they can see a little bit. I usually carry a dozen decoys. If I'm hunting a small area then I use 6 or less. larger area the whole bag. once your decoy bag is empty don't let go it will sink and u wont find it. lights I recommend one that u wear on your head. cell phone...if you take it and you carry in the pocket of your waders make sure u have it in ur pocket before letting go. always take a friend in case u do drop phone and that is what u use to get out of woods. if you do drop phone know where north is and where the road is in relation to north or you will get lost. take a compass in case u don't know where north is. have a paddle and extra prop for boat. take a climber bottom for you when the morning is slow so you can sit down. bring food and leave in boat when you get hungry. when/if it gets below freezing put duck calls in coat when not using them so the reed wont freeze up.
I think that covers it. I'm still a rookie myself but its a learning experience every time I go and these are the few things I have found out on my journey. Enjoy and safe hunting
