What critter caused this?

Postby Roach » Tue Feb 11, 2014 9:13 am

I have a lake in central MS that is surrounded by old cypress trees. This past weekend I was riding around and noticed fresh cut holes in some of the cypress trees that I have no idea what could have caused them.
These holes are perfectly round and range in size from a quarter up to the size of a tennis ball and are from a foot off the ground up to five feet high.
Some of the chips that were removed are up to a inch long and 1/2 inch wide.
I have a picture is someone wants to add it on here for me.

I still say it was a woodpecker going after some sort of wood boring insect or grub.

A woodpecker can make wood chips that big?
Looks like an auger bit has drilled in that bottom hole.
