Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
Dallas airport waiting on flight home. It will be awhile but will add photos when get back to office. Enjoyed hunting with pat and wudduck. Awesome trip. Cooper picked up more birds in 8 days than during the entire Mississippi Season, and strung up quite a few bands to include redhead and brant. Sampled white-wing doves and bass fishing between groups. For guests to say theyd return back to the GetDucks destination Obregon Mexico before theyd go back to Argentina says alot, and I had as much gun shooting swarms of white-winged doves as ive ever had in Cordoba, which is far more costly and travel-involved, and red wine doesn't hold a candle to an endless stream of made from scratch ice cold margaritas! Meantime, photos at getducks.com Facebook page.

You are trying to compare apples to oranges....
Mexico and Argentina are two different experiences...
It is all about the seasonality, in my opinion. I would have loved to have been in Mexico in February, but I doubt the duck hunting there is much good in July. That, obviously is when Argentina is prime.

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
You know what they say: it's duck season somewhere! I just thought it was pretty awesome that one trip ever other year or 2 type hunters said they'd rather do this Obregon trip than Argentina, definitely first time I'd heard that. Another guest said they wanted to organize a dozen guests for white-wing doves instead of Cordoba theyd been considering. Again, apples to oranges, but they choose apples. Wasn't a price-point decision, speaks volumes about how much fun was had.yankee wrote:You are trying to compare apples to oranges....

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
I love the venues in both locations to be sure. If travel time is a consideration for hunters then this is the ticket. If not, the world holds no boundaries for the wingshooter. If someone held a gun to my head and said pick one destination they would just have to shoot me because I couldn't. I've enjoyed over the top gunning in both locations and made great memories. I've often said that "The Mexican Syndrome" exists as there always seems to be a glitch on any trip taken south of the border which however minor seems to always occur. But, this was the smoothest, most problem free and best run trip I've had of the several dozen hunts I've taken in Mexico. The rumble of the airboats in the predawn darkness, watching the sunrise from the blinds as waterfowl coursed the sky and the Doveburgers delivered to us for lunch made for an memorable day. Shooting Ducks, Brant, Whitewings, Mourning Doves, Collared Doves, Elegant Quail, Gamble's Quail or casting for a string stretching Largemouth Bass made for a busy week. And the fresher than fresh guacamole...........

Y'all don't have to sell me on Mexico--I'm a believer! And I will say that the older I get, the longer the flight to Argentina gets....nice to go somewhere you can reach in a short travel day. Also, I will say there is a connection with the north american ducks that I don't feel in Argentina.

Know where you are coming from on the flights Doug. Get longer each time. I too like shooting the N.A. ducks and especially the Brant. Hope you will join us in the future. Missed you down here this year. Was the year of the ice but was good.

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
Connection to the species am interesting point. Took the opportunity to shoot doves for a couple hours before leaving to pick up the second group in Hermosilla. Numerous dove hunts in Cordoba, like a river of endless doves in the sky, but I've never, ever had as much FUN in Cordoba (or in Mississippi) as I did when the white-winged doves turned on. Now I see what all the fuss is about when Texans start talking white-wings. Had been chipping away on a few mourning doves, at about the pace of an average Mississippi Opener when the bird boy tapped his watch and said "white wings in 20 minutes." About nineteen minutes later I was frantically loading shells and corkscrewing in my steps shooting flocks of incoming. For awhile, it was single-shots only, all I had time to load. The brief lulls were enough time to dump a box of shells in my pocket.
Everyone that went on these trips brought birds back, and everyone got the species they wanted most. Fly out of Jackson mid-day, and a few hours later you're at the lodge. These particular hosted hunts focused on ducks and brant, but ducks-brant-doves-bass fishing would be a super fun combo too. Fished one morning, and the host, his young son and I landed 27 large mouth to include a couple 7-8 pounders (missed the hook set on my "trophy" in about 7 feet of water but caught plenty 2-4 pounders). There's nowhere else I can thing of to get an elegant quail, either.
Final perk for me was bringing Cooper. USDA paperwork, like everything else, but it was no more complicated than bringing dog to Canada. She picked up a pile of birds.

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
Everyone got the species they wanted. Some barrels and blinds were hotter, some days slower, than others, luck of the draw real duck hunting, but everyone was happy and went home with the trophy species they wanted. Black brant, Mexican mallards, Gambel's and Elegant quail, blue-winged, green-winged and cinnamon teal, pintail, shovelers, gadwall, redheads, a Mexican x mallard hybrid and a full-blow greenhead were among the species bagged. Took a break between groups and we landed a couple dozen bass one morning (2 7-8 pounders); we focused exclusively on brant-duck combo, but one morning most of the group opted for white-wings and had a great time. THREE 16 GB cards worth of photos will take some time to go through after first catching up on missed calls, but following are some highlights.
Ducks, ducks and more ducks...

First morning, first band of the trip (sorry Adam)...

Brant hunting...

Plenty brant for 3 shooters and a tiring yellow dog...

8 federal bands, 2 tarsus and 1 toe tag...

Always a welcome sight when returning to the lodge...

Always made-from-scratch to perfection, always mouth watering good...

Beat the bushes for Gambel's...

...and Elegant Quail...

Mexican night...

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report

Sure sign it was a fun trip: when hunters break to shoot doves instead of more ducks and brant...

Happy yellow lab doing her thing...

Some birds clink when they hit the water...

Many years ago when I first shot Whitewings with Frank in that same area it was mourning dives early before the sunrise. I asked the bird boy, "Donde paloma blanca?" He pointed to the east and said" El Sol" and smiled. I could see a few Whitewings in the thickets facing east like praying to Mecca. As the sun rose the Whitewings came in waves and the cry of "mas cartouches" rang out around the field as they flew in to feed. Beautiful setting with the mountains in the background and hordes of doves testing our ability. Like Canada Geese the Whitewings aren't the early risers but the wait was worth it. My first experience with them was akin to a mosquito in a nudist colony as I didn't know where to start. I wore my thumb out loading shells and loved it. I think an October trip would be a blast!

Re: Obregon, Mexico Trip Report
White-winged dove hunting gets no better than during the sorghum harvesting season in the Yaqui Valley, Mexico in October. The rate is $2,790 to include EVERYTHING EXCEPT AMMO and you may use lodge guns at no additional charge or bring your own for $120 import fee (up to 2 firearms). Turn key program, morning plus afternoon hunts with lunch and siesta at the nearby air-conditioned lodge. The hunts we did last week (75-120 white-wings) pale in comparison to the main event. Every avid shotgunner owes it to themselves to go to Cordoba at least once during their shooting career, but I can say with confidence that Mexico's white-winged dove hunting is alot closer, alot cheaper, and just plain FUN.
