Best outboard?
Best outboard?
I need a 25 HP tiller stear Electric start 25HP short shaft outboard for my 1650 Express. Whats the best outboard to get. Whats the worst? Help me out guys. I got a price on a yamaha 04' 4 stroke for $2600 and am seriously considering it.

Merc!!
I've got no experience with 4-strokes, so my only suggestion is to stay away from them and get yourself a 2-stroke Merc. I think you should also find them a little better priced than the Yamaha's too. However, I'll admit that my choice for an outboard that doesn't happen to have the name Kiekhaefer stamped on the engine would be a Yamaha.
You know where I stand.

Oh ya, I forgot this:

I don't know for sure, but they ought to be able to ship this to you for next to nothing.

I had a 1546DB with a 40hp Nissan tiller handle with electric start/tilt/trim....battery, stainless and aluminum prop, tax and all was $3200 out the door from Duvics on the Westbank in New Orleans.....a 25 on that size boat with gear/dog isn't going to be all that fast or come out of the hole real quick....I strongly recommend the 40 Nissan.....for the money, I don't believe that there is a better outboard .....Nissan is made by Tohatsu, which is the oldest Japanese commercial outboard motor manufacturer....mainy of the parts on all outboards come from their plants in Japan.....merc/yamaha/omc...just about all of them have some type of part that was conceived and manufactured by Tohatsu from what I have been told over the years....Anyday of the week, I would rather have too much motor and use restraint, than to need it and it not be there.....this comes from first hand accounts of nearly sinking due to overloading and weather conditions......the motor didn't have enough booty to keep water from coming in over the transom.....real bad feeling.....

3rd on the 2 stroke Merc. I am on my 3rd one, and I have had no problems. Between Wildfowler, Mallardchaser, and myself those motors have unspoken hours on them. They hunt and fish with theirs, and I just fish(an occasional river hunt) with mine. They have a proven track record.
This is no longer a vacation, this is a quest, a quest for fun---Chevy Chase.
Thanks guys, I've got a Johnson 40 on it now and it does a great job of pushing the boat. The reason I want a 25 is to hunt specific game management area's in Arkansas that require a 25 or less. I do like the 40 on the boat an would not be looking for a 25 accept for these regulations that I think bite.

Here is my take on the whole which is better outboard. I have owned mercury and I just recently bought a johnson(Got a good deal). The mercury never gave me any problems, the johnson is too new to say anything.
Any outboard made today is gonna be a good outboard. A little maintenance and they will run a long time. I would say go with whatever is cheaper and is there a place close to you that will service it for you in case something happens.

I've got a 15 ft Triton and put a 25 on it. It would cruise with me but if you put a dog, decoys, cooler full of cool ones and another doughboy in it, it looked like a barge!
Droped at 40hp Mariner on it and "HOLD MY BEER" it will go. Not too much hp by any means.
I think you will be unhappy if you go with the 25.
