I have a bunch of friends in the business and you are correct to a point. They do a great job of holding price but it also has a lot to do with the weather(this year in particularly) Late winters keep the crawfish farmers from starting their usual farming practices, which many start before duck season is over on a normal year. Being so cold so late this year keeps a lot of the farmers from farming early, there for it becomes a supply and demand issue. Couple of my buddies ran traps Feb 15th weekend, we had a boil but the size was not there and amount caught per trap was very low. To make money in that market, especially when you paying somebody to run your traps, amount caught per trap becomes a big issue. Gas and time paid to the employee doesn't change, but your profit margin does when the crawfish aren't running the way they do in warmer months. You probably just going to have to either pony up and pay higher prices for the time being or eat chicken.

the doctor wrote:Am sure there is just cause for the high price, but know this from a guy that worked in that business for 10+ years, there aint a group in the world as good at holding a price than the LA crawfish farmers. Oil companies got nothing on them. In fact it seemed like it never got real competitve until the fishermen from the basin started turning in good numbers.

Just heard a report of @ $3 live up around Cleveland, but I suspect thats someone trying to unload what they didnt sell this weekend.

Hope they come down soon.
