duck eggs (hen left them)

Postby levi127 » Mon May 19, 2014 1:20 pm

We have this hen that made a nest in our flower bed. Been there everyday and never bothered at all. She hasnt left them except at night for a little while but back on them before we wake up. Then stays on them all day long. I put duck feed out for her and she had been eating it.
Well 2 days ago we saw her take off during middle of the day. Went an checked and she had rolled 2 eggs outta the nest and pushed away from the rest. Well she hasnt came back in 2 days now.

any help on what to do with them, take them to or something?. Suppose to hatch around 28th day. I did check them and all 7 are alive and active, checked with lights and stuff for viens.

Before you say contact DU, I already did and got zero help except find a chicken basically. I know its a federal offense but hey they are in my flower bed and trying to save them rather then loose them!

They're probably ruined now.

Call Jxn office and ask for a rahabber. 601-432-2400

Thanks wingman.
I got them out and brought them inside. Got them in a incubator? Now and watching them. 5 of the 7 I can see the duck inside moving around, 2 of them I havent picked up any movement on. Which they are 24 days since laid today and think hatch at 28 days.

Its just my daughter has gotten stuck on these eggs. She always has feed the ducks and babies in the ponds but never had one do this before and we are a good ways away from the water. So she is really hoping I can do something to help these eggs.

Good deal. Sounds like they're ginna make it! To be legal, get them to a rehabilitator. You don't want them to imprint on you when they hatch.

Trying to locate one now. I found a woman in collierville that works with all birds but now she wont answer. So I will try again in the AM.

Yea it was good to actually see the birds inside the eggs moving around. Never seen anything lile that before in the wildlife.

Which my daughter was excited this past season with all the birds we took during season. But now she has a different look at it all. Made me promise I wouldnt shoot the momma or any of the babies lol. Told her nope, ive got a different look at things at how hens lay eggs and stuff. Figure 1 hen taken out during season equals 7-10 new birds if they make it. Which in the ponds right now we have mayne 24 baby ducks by 3 different hens. Which this hen to our eggs I still havent seen again. She was huge compared to the size of the other hens around here.

still think its odd. Other hens nested in the banks and stuff I guess. This hen is atleast 150 yards away from the ponds. The creek runs behind the house but big drop off into it and still good 50 yards away. Either way glad she picked us! Daughter and wife have enjoyed watching it all and driving me crazy with what to do!
Thanks guy!

Sounds like you may need a duck costume for imprinting. You don't have much time left!
