Golf cart: Gas vs Electric

I'm thinking about getting a golf cart and picking my clubs back up to get a little exercise. (not walking the course. not wanting That much exercise)

Looking at the used carts that are out there and almost all the electric ones say "new batteries". My question is, how often do you have to
replace the batteries in these carts? Do they go bad pretty often? It's ridiculous the prices people are asking for used carts as well. Anybody
got any leads on Reasonably priced carts? I'd rather have gas powered cart but the majority I see are battery powered. Looking for a good used
one for a not new price. I can get a new cart for $4k so I'm not paying that for a used one with old batteries on it and cigarette burns in the seats.

I would get an electric - I would not own a gas for any reason.

batteries will last 4-5 years with proper maintenance.

golf carts should go 12-18 miles on a charge.

Electric parts hardly ever wear out. I have a 1993 EZGO that is still going strong.

Proper maintenance includes

charging when not in use
cleaning terminals
keeping clean water in the batteries
making sure cables stay tight and corrosion free.

I agree with everything that jdbuckshot said above, except that I don't get the 12-18 miles per charge that he mentioned.

What is the issue with gas burner?

I like the electric because it is so quiet. I use my cart for turkey hunting (when feasible) and for general woods-riding. My only experience with a gas cart has been on a sporting clays range - it was fine for what we were doing, but makes a little more noise.

I can't believe y'all said that at all about gas. I've had numerous electric and gas. Electric batteries will last on average 3 years. That depends on how well you keep them full of distilled water and keep them charged. I've had some i've had to replace in 1 year.....others have lasted 3-4. My next door neighbor has a 1 year old EZ Go. He had to replace his batteries a few months ago.......after only 8 months or so. I have a 2004 club car with an ingersoll rand engine. I just have to change oil and keep gas in it. If you are a hard core golfer....you'll want gas. An electric is not going to last all day long if you are playing multiple rounds of golf and driving around.

Also, where in the world did you hear you can buy a new golf cart for $4000? I know what Club Car, Yamaha, and EZ go sell for new.........all in the 6000-8000 range now. Used carts in decent shape are costing around 3000-3500.

New electric (basic cart which is all I need) sell for $2500. I don't need a jacked up cart with fancy wheels and such. I prefer the gas cart because
I'm not going to do anything but golf and let the kids ride. These guys were pitching the electric over the gas so I was trying to figure out why.

$6k-$8k carts are way more loaded out that what I'm looking for. I just need a golf cart, not a hunting cart.

If I wasn't doing any hunting on it I would definitely get gas. They are cheaper and you don't have to worry about much maintenance at all. If it never goes into the woods and only on pavement or concrete it should last almost forever!

The carts I'm referring to are plain jane ones. What brand are you looking at? I wouldn't suggest one if it wasn't EZ Go, Club Car, or Yamaha. You can't go buy a used fleet cart for 2500.

I have a club car I would sell.

it has about a 3-4" lift

Knobby tires

cargo bed in rear and basket in front.

floor mounted vertical gun rack -and rear gun rack.

hitch receiver in front and back.

winch on hitch receiver - both electric and hand crank

batteries bought new in jan 2012

Thanks JD, I think I'm going to keep looking for a gas one. Plus I'd have to buy all the rear golf bag attachment stuff for your, and new tires to keep
from tearing up the golf course sod.

That's what i figured. Look up creech's golf carts. It's not that far up I55 from Memphis in Arkansas. He usually has real nice carts for cheaper than anywhere around here. Club Car used ones are like a tank.....they don't rattle and such like used Yamaha's and EZ Go's tend to.
