Charity Work for Kids?
I am been bouncing around the idea of how to get my 6 y/o daughter to appreciate the things she has in life, primarily good health and roof over her head. Sitting at home yesterday in the rain she came to sit in my lap and we had a talk about how fortunate we were and we need to give back, I asked her if she wanted to go and visit some kids at Batson or go help feed the homeless. She was receptive. However as I got to thinking about it in more detail I think I want to try an encourage something with a little more involvement. I dont know what this will be but something we can see progress in. Where it will have steps, if something like this is even out there. This is were DS comes in. I am looking for suggestions, ideas or direction. Thanks in advance.

Prior to my twins 5th birthday, we talked with them about how fortunate we are to have so many things and how nice it would be to give to others that are sick. They probably didn't understand the whole concept, but agreed it was a good idea. One of them had stayed at the hospital for a minor procedure so that may have helped. We got in touch with the local children's cancer center at the hospital and they sent us a list of needs for the play area.
We included the list in the party invitations and had a great response from the other parents. We told them they could either keep their favorite thing from the gifts or we would get them a special doll. We made a big deal about what a good thing they were doing, took them to drop off the toys and got them a special ice cream treat of their choosing.
Another idea we were told, is to collect pet items for the local shelter. I think either one could turn into an annual thing.
Good job teaching your daughter to help others.

My wife and the local VFW Ladies took up a collection of hats and took to St. Jude in Memphis. I can not think of any better place to notice just how blessed we really are.
