Good gift for farmer & contractor?

Postby JDgator » Wed Jun 25, 2014 8:13 pm

Im moving from south Georgia to Mobile, Al. I'm letting of the deer lease I've had for five years. The two brothers who have leased me hunting rights have been very good to me. Ones a farmer and the other is a residential contractor. I want to give them a little thank-you gift before I leave. I'm trying to think of ideas... In my line of work, I'm occasionally given laptops and surface devices by tech companies hoping I'll develop a positive impression of their product or service. Would a farmer or a contractor appreciate or use a new notebook/laptop or iPad? I'm on the fence with this. Both have teenage kids so maybe they could hand them down. I could pass each guy a bottle of nice bourbon but I don't know if they drink. Thoughts?

I pads for the kids would make the kids happy, but I wonder if the the farmers, like most parents, would could consider the ipads a distraction....kids sitting on sofa playing. Why Mobile?

I was going to suggest a nice bottle of bourbon myself. Even if they aren't "heavy" drinkers, I don't know of a farmer or contractor that doesn't enjoy a nice sip every once in a while. To forget about the stresses of the job, if nothing else.

Not sure of the age of the farmer, but most would be appreciative of the iPad. There are so many ag related apps out there now that make an iPhone or iPad a very useful device.

^^^ this if you go the surface device route. find a good farm mgmt app for the farmer and a good contracting mgmt app for the contractor (even if you pay for the first year's subscription, if applicable, they generally aren't exorbitant amounts). definitely ipad over laptop, due to only 1 cable (and only when it needs charging) and battery life of the ipads over laptops.

Dunno what your planning on spending...

The small quiet generators like a Honda 1000 are great for all sorts of stuff that farmers and contractors do. Gonna set you back around a grand.

Thanks for the ideas, guys. I gave them each a bottle of Buffalo Trace and an iPad with water resistant, shock-proof case. They were both genuinely pleased. The contractor had his truck broken into today and this was a nice rebound for him.
