Spann Robertson and Don Fancher were both dedicated duck hunters in this area and great men to boot. World will be a little dimmer with out them.
Spann Robertson
(March 29, 1935 - August 6, 2014)
Spann was born on March 29, 1935, to Willie Clinton Robertson and Earnestine Acy Robertson. He passed away on Wednesday, August 06, 2014, surrounded by his family. Spann attended Black Hawk School and graduated from Holmes Agricultural High School in 1953. He attended Holmes Junior College in 1954, where he played basketball. Spann joined the Marines in 1955 and was a member of the 6th Marine Regiment. He served a tour of duty in the Mediterranean Sea as part of a peace keeping force. After being honorably discharged in 1958, Spann embarked on a successful career in the cotton business. After 21 years with Staplcotn, he left to open his own company, Spann Robertson Cotton, which remains active today. Spann enjoyed hunting and fishing and was the Past President of the Leflore County Hunting & Fishing Association. He was the longest serving member of its Board of Directors. He was very active in the Black Hawk Methodist Church and served many years as the Finance Chairman, as well as the Board of Trustees. Spann was also a driving force in the restoration and preservation of the Historic Old Black Hawk School Building and had a leadership roll in the Annual Homecoming. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Earnest Carroll Robertson; his sister, Willie Mae Robertson Coward; three brothers in law, James Coward, Houston Mims, and Donald Ford; and his life long best friend, Robert Shute. He is survived by his wife, Carol Jean Edwards Robertson; four children, Gary Robertson (Donna), Russ Robertson (Mellonie), Angela Adams, and Jeanna Robertson. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Blake Adams (Kim), Morgan Taylor (Jeffrey), Russell Robertson (Rachel), Willie Robertson, Joshua Robertson, Clay Robertson, and Jake Robertson. Spann is also survived by 1 great grandson, Rivers Taylor. He is also survived by his best friend and duck hunting buddy, Robert Pool and his wife Billie Joyce. Visitation will be held on Friday, August 8, from 5 until 7 pm, at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, August 9, at 2:00 pm at the Black Hawk Methodist Church in Black Hawk. Brother Ricky Reece will officiate. Burial will be at the Black Hawk Cemetery. Pall Bearers will be Jimmy Chandler, Jerry Galey, Wayne Peacock, Alan Daves, Mathew Streater, Robert Pool, Michael Bussey, and George Saunders. Honorary Pall Bearers will be Sam Gullette, Jimmy Coward, Wilton Sanders, Bob Acree, and Joe Saunders. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorials be made to the Black Hawk Cemetery Association, 703 County Road 235, Coila, MS, 38923.
Donald E. Fancher
(September 6, 1938 - August 2, 2014)
Don Fancher, 75, of Carrollton died Saturday, August 2, 2014 at his residence. Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Wilson & Knight Chapel. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday, August 6, 2014 at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery. Rev. Tommy Clark will officiate.
Mr. Fancher was born September 6, 1938 in Carroll County to Graham Diggs and Mary Strub Fancher. He was a graduate of Greenwood High School class of 1958 where he was a member of the Tide Club and Mississippi State University class of 1962. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity and a member of North Carrollton Baptist Church where he served on the usher committee for 4 years.
Mr. Fancher was a former member of the Leflore County Hunting and Fishing Association where he conducted several Gun Safety courses. Don’s special interests thru the years was Duck Hunting and made some of Leflore County’s best hot tamales. He was a loving and devoted father and husband. He was a salesman at Hamrick Motor Co., Cade-Davis-Tubbs Ford and he sponsored the girls’ softball team for his company, Don Fancher Autos, Inc. from 1975 to 1982. He is preceded in death by a brother, Myron Russell Fancher, his mother, Mary Strub Fancher and his father, Graham Diggs Fancher.
Mr. Fancher is survived by his wife, Paulette Bogart Fancher of Carrollton, daughters, Paula Jean Fancher Vance and husband Billy, their 5 children, Kim Massey, Kadie and Sissy Vance, Andrea Fancher and Jake Jolly, all of Tupelo, MS, Candy Fancher McGee and husband Darren, their 4 children, Aaron, Jonathan, Micah and Jordan, all of Indianapolis, IN. Nieces and nephews, Donna Davis and Cindy Addison of Olive Branch, MS, Andy Fancher of Harrison, TN, Mariclaire and Michael Fancher of Greenwood.
