Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
Is the term "running" acceptable here?
Sorry can't help with the motor, except get a 2 stroke. You will be more happy.

Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
"Best" prop is going to depend more on what boat your running it on.
Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
It's a 1542 triton.

Yamaha black stainless 14 or 15 pitch should be a good start.

Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
I tried a 11.1" x 14 pitch that was on a friends 50 hp mercury and it seemed aggressive if that makes any sense. It was torquing in the tiller harder than before and turns were very jerky. Would a smaller diameter like a 10.5x14 or 10.5x13 improve any of that
Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
Raising the motor up a little may help to decrease tiller torque.

Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
I just raised it to hole #3 as recommend by quince marine in Memphis which I think helped a good bit.

I am too.. what size prop do you have on yours?
Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
I've got an old slow yamaha... I'm just trying to pass along some of the info I've gathered while researching different setups for my situation.
Danny on the refuge forums would be who I would consult when trying to setup a 40hp Mercury...

Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
Thats a heavy motor for that size boat. I'd either look at getting a 2-stroke or sell the boat and buy a bigger one 1648+...
Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
Thanks trip. Wish it was a old slow Yamaha.. It's actually my dad's boat and I'm just fortunate enough to use it so trying to make the best of what I got to work with.
Re: 40 hp Mercury 4 stroke question
No problem man... depending on what model you've got, that 40hp 4-stroke can be made to blow the doors off most other 40-60hp motors. Do yourself a favor and get on the refuge forums and look up user: 1995 US1
