Question for the wise old DS Brain Trust

Postby jacksbuddy » Fri Nov 07, 2014 11:05 am

Alright boys, I wanna know if it is just me, or do all Daddy's do this. My little girl is approaching 1, and I have noticed that I have made some unexpected changes in my life since her arrival. For instance, I am reading more, watching less TV, and studying the Good Book more regularly.

Did y'all make any such lifestyle changes when you first became parents? If so, what were they? Or am I just losing what few wits I have left?

I made some changes too. I quit taking a bath with my daughter when she was almost 2. She decided to grab my man hood and pull it..Time to take a bath by herself

I watch less tv for two reasons. There is almost nothing fit on tv fit for my kids to see or to see me watching, and when I have time to sit down and relax for a minute, I don't want to hear other peoples' voices!!!

I agree, I started a few months ago really paying attnetion to what I was watching and if it helped or hindered me. Most of it hindered me in that it's just negative crap. Whther you want to believ it or not, you absorb that kind of stuff and it manifest it's self sooner or later.

As for the kids, you are going ot see yoursefl more and more become aware of the man you and the legacy you are leaving. But it's a god thing. It's how God intended it to be. Our kids are our barometers on what we are doing right and wrong.

A lot less hunting, but have found other ways to involve them outdoors with me - I have two girls 7 and 4. My oldest and I ride our bikes together, they are both learning to fish and I have more fun with their bb gun than they do. We are all big fans of the boat and especially snacks and drinks whilst riding in the boat.

Really good book out there for dads, especially dads with daughters title is what a difference a daddy makes by kevin leman .

As for tv...weve been pulling for sadie here lately on dwts and to my suprise they both love andy griffith reruns. They watch all the other crap too...we just try to limit it.

I try every day to spend time with my kids doing something they love to do. With my 3 yr old boy that is usually fighting with swords like power rangers or having tickle fights, both fun and easy for both of us. With my 6 yr old girl its a little tougher. My manly self usually ends up sitting on her bed playing with Barbies or helping pick out rubber band colors for the bracelets she is working on. Its all about the time invested. I think these are things most parents do who have small children.

Let me issue this challenge though. As a Youth Pastor I spend lots of time with teenagers, and many of them just don't spend a lot of time with their parents just hanging out. If you are the parent of a teenager, make it a point to do the things your teenager enjoys rather than letting them just spend time with you doing the things you enjoy. If spending time with your child is important when they are little, it is 10x more important when they are teenagers. You may hate their activity, but love them enough to do it.

Had to correct that for you. Yeah, I'm an old fart. But then again, when the boys start becoming a problem, jail will start looking like a relaxing alternative. :?

Wise words from Ace.......I hear you loud an clear!! Hard to go up and spend an hour in the playroom coloring, but I should do it more often instead of making them hush while I watch the game.
