another ask ducksouth: calls and learning

Postby hdforester » Fri Dec 05, 2014 8:34 am

My son (grown) has decided he wants to learn to call. Started back hunting with me last year and has really gotten in to it again. Even though I've done it for 40 plus years I'll be the first to admit I'm not the one to teach him. What is the best instructional cd/dvd out there? Also going to buy him a call (Christmas) and should I go ahead and buy him a good single reed to learn with? I know a double is easier. Opinions from the braintrust appreciated.

Start him on a single reed. Keith Allen has a good instructional video.

The best, and most simple, advice If I can give one tip is use the air you would use to fog up a window. With that air, count 1,2,3,4,5 through the call and it will come out quaackk, quaack, quack, quack, quack.

Good luck, hope this helps.

My advice, for what its worth, is to get both a DR and SR call. The Keith Allen Instruction is tremendous. I also like the Buck Gardner cadence of '3 blind mice'.......quack, quack, quack with breath like you breathe to clean your sunglasses (as Champ said, fog a mirror). I wouldn't worry about the feed chatter, come back calls and such, start simple and get it RIGHT. If he can learn the basic quack very well, he will be able to out 'call' about 75% of most duck hunters who have tried to get too fancy, too quick..........best of luck!

I would start him out using the Blow Like The Pros App for Iphone or Ipad and soon to be released android. I have heard it is pretty good.

I'll be glad to teach him! Shouldn't take more'n 5-10 minutes! By the way, do you ever check your emails?

Never got it...just checked again. I suspect you're just trying to protect your favorite ducks from the exterminator! How're you, Georgia, and family doing? Delta is doing pretty good...only thing holding her back is the idiot who's training her! We're having fun, though. She has retrieved several woodies the last week. Still doesn't like gunfire much, though. Hope to get back home after Christmas sometime.

Everyone well. Hope to see you soon. Need cold. Pet the water poodle for me. I sent the email- don't know why you didn't get it. Might check spam folder.

Still looking for call suggestions. Out of my element in today's call world. Come along way from the old wood yentzens.

Long time ago I bought a single reed Primos call that came with the Buck Gardner cd. Simple and cheap and he should be able to pick it up pretty quickly. He'll know when he hits that quack just right the first time.

Can't find a Keith Allen instructional video, dvd, or cd anywhere. Any thoughts on where to find one? Thinking about a RNT original or short barrel.

Either one is a good bet to start on. I'd lean to the short barrel.
