Depression Question

Postby GET-N-RITE » Tue Feb 03, 2015 11:18 am

Probably pretty odd question for a duck forum but there always seems to be some good advice and a wide range of people on the board. I would rather not go into much detail about this and would prefer a PM, but I am looking for some advice. I have a friend that I am worried about. I feel like this person is depressed and needs help, however there is so much anger that I can't get this person to talk to me, and they are fine. This person actually thinks that I am out to get them or harm them. When I try and help them they feel as if I am putting them down, and nothing is ever good enough. I am worried about this persons well being and state of mind. So if there is anybody that has dealt with this or can give me some advice it would be greatly appreciated.

From personal experience, get them help. Either though another person they are close to or forcefully. Draw a line and get them help. They will appreciate it down the road. Get someone else involved if it helps.

Get them help, even if it oversteps your boundaries. MSducks lost a good friend on here for that very same thing (depression). I wish someone could have recognized and helped save his life. We don't know what types of battles people face and it aint our job to judge them for those battles, but I do believe it is our job to try to help even if it interferes/ruins a relationship.

Get help in anyway possible. Does the person have family that can talk to him? Best way to do it is bring it up as casual as possible. If there is a family member that he talks to, talk with that family member and see how much it progresses.

I've been through depression and it is nothing fun.

Family member's and friends called me asking what is going on. This person doesn't want to talk to anyone one on one. This person only wants to talk through txt message. Will not answer phone when called and will not return phone calls.

if you know the source of his problems, contact an organization that specializes in that area and ask fo guidance. Please note, when you mention its a friend, they may assume its you. hopefully many years from now he will thank you for your friendship.

Another consideration...often times when someone starts shutting everyone out and seems mad at the world it isn't depression but guilt or something shameful they are hiding like an affair, addiction, things aren't good at home, etc. Just a thought...

Sounds like they need professional help. Sounds like you have tried everything you can, so might be good to find someone they are close to for help.

From experience, please don't stop trying.

If the person wants to talk in text messages, then start there. Might seem time consuming to type a message, but fight the urge to actually want to talk in person. When the person stops communicating via text then start to look at other means of forcible communication. When I was going through depression, I started buying things and racking up credit card debit as a means of coping. I didn't shutdown socially or stop talking to people. Other than receiving packages after packages in the mail, nobody had any clue that I was depressed. Finally I broke down, then started talking. I didn't resort to drugs or alcohol, I resorted to buying things. Why, I have no clue at all. Anyway, the person communicating via text is a good thing. At least he is communicating considering he is not communicating at all in person or verbally to anyone.

Want to thank each and everyone of you for the PM'S and the replies. I am doing the best I can with what this person is willing to give, which isn't much. The txt messages are pretty short. I mean that as in you can type a book, and pretty much get an okay back or I'm fine. Going to keep trying my best to help and do what I think is right, but I have a lot of leaning to do on the man above.

Thank you again for the replies.

Don't give up no matter what and prayers are headed ya'lls way. Everyone needs help and sometimes it takes a lot of help from many people that care but I promise with patience and consistence it will get better and that grey cloud will be lifted for that person. Best of luck and don't hesitated to reach out to any of us here if you need something.

I wish there was less stigma surrounding depression. Then maybe more people would get help. I know I've had to deal with this in my own life. Most people on this board have as well. Some people have chemical imbalances that cause depression; others go through difficult phases in their life. Speaking with a professional will help.
