Derby Days

Since when did this become such a big deal??? I had friends go absolutely full blown crazy over having a derby day party. Is this just the new spring event to give grown people a reason to dress up in ridiculous clothes and have a party sort of like Halloween became a big adult event in the fall over the past few years?

My wife and I were talking about the same thing Saturday. It has gotten a little crazy. Hadnt thought about the comparison to Halloween, but very fitting. I have always enjoyed watching the race, and would love to go. Now that is a Derby party I could get into!

People seem to be trying awfully hard to find ways to spend money these days, especially to be in a recession (or just out of one ... Or so close to another one).

Our very own H2O FOWL is very into derby day.
Maybe Josh can fill us in. Seems like a good excuse to dress up & have a cocktail to me!

We had them years ago at MSU, but then again most any event was cause to have a party then. "Look, a day that ends in Y. Get out the beer!"

I think its a bunch of people getting together being pretentious and acting like they are more fancy than they really are. The rest are drug there by their wives.

Yep pissed off two friends because I politely told them I would rather be behind the boat or sitting on a sandbar than acting like someone I'm not. I think they were pissed because like Vickers said they were being dragged to those parties against their will. But again seriously.....why????

All I'll say is that I got to watch MSU beat the Tigers in a rocking chair on the front porch of a wildlife lodge with a bourbon slush, candied bacon, BBQ, seafood pasta, and pecan pie. No complaints.

As for the derby, the first time I heard a horse's name that day was when they announced the winner.

I enjoy the atmosphere. I enjoy betting on the race. Dog and Horse races are fun.

Think of betting on a football game. Its really not that exciting unless in the final two minutes you have a chance of winning.

Well, A horse/dog race is only two minutes at most. When there is a chance you could win 1000's of dollars off of a rather small bet, that's exciting to me.

Now just a party at someone's house? I don't think I could get into that, but It's a blast at the track. Especially betting all the different races throughout the day leading up to the big one

My wife enjoys dressing up and sipping whatever god awful drink it is they always serve. ( that usually works out in my favor as well) It's a blast. I invite any of y'all to come to the track in west Memphis with me in two weeks for the Preakness race. I guarantee a good time will be had!

I absolutely love horse racing. We have a small get together every year for the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Belmont too if there is a chance for a triple crown. We don't dress up or wear hats but we have been known to drink a mint julep or 2. Place bets on almost all the side races and of course the Derby. We have a good time.

So the drinking and betting and is the allure that makes some endure dressing up funny. That makes more sense I guess.
