I assume you're referring to the outside unit or the compressor. first thing to check for on the fan would be the capacitor. If the windings are going bad on the fan it may need to be replaced if the Cap checks out.
Fan would run you prob 100-200 diy. a replacement capacitor is usually 10-20 bucks. I'd swap the capacitor to rule that out first.

If it is the capacitor, it's an easy fix. It took me just as long to replace mine as a professional would have charged me for, and I had to make two trips to the parts house.

Nobody owes you anything.

Yep definitely try to swap capacitor first. Seems like those are the most often the culprit. Had to replace ours on a three year old system. Take the old one off but kill the power to the system first at the breaker box.

They offer a buy one get one deal where if the Capacitor ever fails bring it in and swap it out. I always keep a spare on hand for both of my units.

Good prices and good customer service. When I had to replace the capacitor on mine a couple of years ago, it cost me around $50.00. And just last month, I had a fuse go out on my dryer. Not only did they have the right part in stock, but they also offered a warranty on the electrical parts. Who does THAT?!?!?
Nobody owes you anything.

Whatever you do do not call one hour heating and air. They wanted to charge me $450 to replace capacitor.

Thanks for everything guys! Replaced this morning, and knock on wood still working great..
I was still hesitant to attempt the repair myself, worried about screwing up an expensive system worse and worried about getting electrocuted.
being in a similar boat this morning as MShunter...every place I looked was in the 400 range...I said screw it I'll do it myself and hope for the best...
I called around this morning and figured out who the local dealer was for the model a/c .. found them....was out the door with taxes $32.00
10-15 min labor....fixed
