modem/router for internet?

Getting wifi at the house and am going to buy instead of rent the modem/router. I know nothing about this so do I need a router/modem combo or how does this stuff work? We will only be using this for surfing the web and possibly Netflix in the future. Internet has to be through Comcast as it's my only option at this time. I'm looking to spend around $100. I don't need anything special. What is a decent router/modem? Thanks!

You should only need a router with wifi. The ISP should provide the modem. And I would use their modem. If there are connectivity issues, they will be able to remotely access their modem and check for issues. If it is your modem, they are automatically going to blame it for any issues.

I use the Motorola SURFboard modem/wireless router from Best Buy.
It paid for itself in a little over since Comcrap charges $7.50/ Month to rent the router.

Seems like I had to call comcast & have them add it to the equipment list.
I agree with Joel that they will blame your equipment, but luckily I haven't had that problem (YET).

Most of the time they'll sell you one just as easy as they'll rent you one. Every company will give you a specific list of modems compatible with their system. You have to make sure if you buy one on your own, that it is on their list. You need to also make sure they'll access the settings on yours if you own it. Some companies will log in and change the settings but may not if not supplied by them.
