Surgery

Postby Seymore » Fri May 15, 2015 4:06 am

Anybody had the surgery where they wrap the upper part of the stomach around the esophagus. I have a hiatal hernia really bad with bad GERD and a very weak esophagus. Supposedly this is to solve all those problems but I ain't convinced to pull the trigger yet. My health sucks and I've been hacked on more than a newbies first attempt at butchering a deer.

My cousin had that done in Indianapolis about 10 years ago. He had GERD really bad and developed Barrett's Esophagus even after taking tons of medications on a daily basis. The Barrett's led into Esophageal Adenocarcinoma. That's when he had the procedure done, b/c they had to remove a good bit of his Esophagus. He was fine for several years that way, but had to watch what he ate and how he chewed to make sure he could swallow it.

Pm me and I will tell you most of what you need to know. I probably know and have worked with the surgeon that you are talking to about it. It's not that big of a procedure. Most of the time done laparoscopic all with very quick recovery time.

Are you having a fundaplication surgery I believe?? If so you will never be able to throw up again which can be a double edge sword. I wouldn't do it unless your reflux is eating your esophagus up really bad as you can't reverse that procedure. Last but most important is research and pick a surgeon that has done a bunch of em.

I am having a Nissen Fundaplication surgery but it is going to be a partial wrap and not a full wrap. Also will have the hiatal hernia closed up at the same time. I have little to no motility in my esophagus and has the 48 hour test that measures Ph level. It was interesting to wake up in the middle of the night and look at the receiver on the night stand and see that it read 1-1.5. I have to get my esophagus stretched every 6 months because the acid keeps building scar tissue. Barrets was mentioned as not being far off.

If your having that much esophagus trouble then do what you need to. Do any reflux meds help??? I would try fixing your hiatal hernia first as that may help a lot. Like I said the once you do the fundaplication you can't go back. When you get an upset stomach etc or virus you can't throw up to get relief. I have seen several that wished they hadn't done that procedure but everyone is different. Just make sure your surgeon is top notch.

Doing what you are doing now is worse than the wrap. Structures and the cancer that comes with Barrets is a bad deal. It's kind of like back surgery meaning that it works well most of the time.
