yes i think he would see your lights. space is a vacuum which means there is no resistance. in this vacuum if you and a friend were both going 100 mph(earth time), him in front of you, and you throw a baseball towards him, it would catch him b/c there is no resistance in space, the baseball would travel the speed you threw it plus the speed that your traveling. this occurs because the baseball is already going 100mph and you just added more force to it making it go faster than you. if you did that on earth the baseball would never rech him (and maybe bust your windshield) b/c the resistance of our atmosphere would slow it down. in my mind the speed of light is the fastest there is, but not the fastest speed possible. kind of like adding the number 1 to infinite.
no you have not traveled 2000 miles. you traveled 1000 miles and the earth traveled 1000 miles. still two points, just moving away from each other.
so what if you went 1000 miles from earth and stopped... as the earth rotated around the sun it would get farther away from you... so if you earth travels another 1000 miles from you , does that mean you have traveled 2000 miles.... everything is moving

i don't see how you have to have time to have speed. i agree that you use time to measure speed. you don't have to have time to have acceleration. acceleration is caused by force not time. but if you have accelerated you definitely have speed, but we have to have time to MEASURE this speed.
as for the synchronized watches, that's just theory which has never been proven or disproven.
Not tryin to make out like a know it all either. just tryin to work my way through logic. this may be the most intelligent conversation this site has had in a long time. maybe we need a Deep Thinkers Forum. good post Beastmaster, i guess we use the top head some times, right?

yea it is used as a measure, but not a necessity to have. how about this...energy is measured in joules right. if i move away from you with a force of 10,000 joules, wouldn't that be a measure of speed? not time involved there, just energy. we use time to MEASURE speed and to MEASURE acceleration. this is like saying there is no temperature if there isn't a thermometer around.

Dude! It's been 20 years since I took physics in college. I used to read my physics book for FUN!
Man, those were the days.

Sorry hillhunter, I guess I don't understand the question. You said that energy is measured in joules, which is correct, but then you talked abount moving away with a force of 10000 joules, but force is measured in newtons or lbf, not joules. To get a speed from force, there has to be mass involved also. MY HEAD IS HURTING!

Bully wrote:Actually, time is used to measure acceleration in either meters per second squared or feet per second squared.
It can be used: acceleration = distance / (time x time),
but not necessary: Force = mass x acceleration,
therefore: acceleration = force / mass.
Distance is need not always be measured relative to the earth, distance is a measure from point A to point B. It can measure from one point in space to the next without using the earth as a reference. However, this gets to be a bit complicated because in space you are always in a state of perpetual motion, never actually sitting "still" at one point, therefore you are always covering some distance. The distance would be measured by relating some point in space (point A), while in motion, to the next (point B). Sort of like using a sign you pass on the highway as one point of reference (point A) and the next sign passed as point B. Time used to measure speed in space is measured by time relating to the space shuttle, not time on earth. This resolves the time discrepancy theory (the two twins theory) between earth and the shuttle. If earth time was used, there would always be some differentiation between the earth time and time on the shuttle, even though it is immeasurably minute.

doc, name some of these girls you were taking out while "we" were in class?? wait, cancel that, i'm sure that list is too long.... humor us... name off the last 10 women you scored with less your fiance.
hillhunter one of the questions i asked was, if two cars were traveling behind one another both just faster than the speed of light; would the front car see the headlights of the car behind it??
as far as the watch in a plane analogy... IT IS PROVEN FACT.... THAT HAS BEEN TESTED.. no need for dope on that one... lmao
so i'm still asking... how do you tell direction in space... ?
if you are out in space and you want to go towards pluto, you can very well just say... lets go towards pluto??? its moving remember. you can go to where pluto will be given your current speed and so on...
what did Picard always say? Set a course for Romulian 3 at warp 6, engage.. make it so.
wingman to answer your question about the twins.. going 1000 mph for X amount of time would not make a noticable difference... gotta be big big number for speed up around the speed of light.. the watch experiment was measured way out there ... the watches were not synchronized but only by like 0.000000000039 secs but if you were to multiply the speed up to the speed of light or greater then that time frame would change dramatically
is it turkey season yet?
