Ole Miss and National Championships......(Football)
Moderator: Sports Forum Mods
Could someone confirm Ole Miss's schedule back when they claimed national championships? I've heard that the teams back then didn't play but 6 or 8 games or so. I've also heard (rumors most probably) that UM had a weak schedule in the late 50's and early 60's. In other words they didn't play anyone with a winning record and granted they had an above average coach (Vaught) with slightly above average talent. That's why they won games and excited Mississippian's emotions by waving the confederate flag, and seemed to be at national champion status.
I admit, I am a State alumni / fan and this story is easy for me to want to believe, but facts are facts. Is there any truth to the idea that UM lucked up and had an easy schedule with a slightly above average team and an over zealous support base that forced a national championship status on the team of that era?

back when vaught was there he and the bear didn't square off but like 2 or 3 times every decade....

Check out this site. Gives scores to every college game on record. Also gives the opponents records.

Good info on that link BPT.
After a quick and dirty look at the numbers, here's what I see:
For the years '59, '60, and '61, the one and only loss was to LSU in regular season play in '59 for which UM beat later on same year in Sugar Bowl. The only tie was to LSU in '60. ALL other games were in W column.
UM went to and won Sugar Bowl in '59, '60, and '61. Same 3 years, UM outscored opponents 877 - 144.
As tough as it is for this Dawg to type this, I certainly think UM fans have a leg to stand on when arguing national champ status for those years.

there u go smarty pants.. what'ya think bout them crackers...???
If it hadn't been for Virginia, the South would have lost in less than a year. Lee, Jackson, Stuart, and Johnson - all of 'em would have had Union commands. Hell, those four generals and 250,000 men could have captured Montgomery in 6 months. Who would you take - the above guys, or Bragg, Forrest, Longstreet and Ewell? No Tredegear Ironworks in Richmond making cannon. Most of the east coast railroads ran through Virginia (Richmond, Danville, Staunton and Roanoke).
And besides, I am from Jackson - I just live in Richmond now. And I still come back to slaughter some ducks in the Delta a few times a year.

FACT,.... Both of em "SUCKED" last year !
In a world of "WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR ME LATELYS",... I don't really give a rats booty, who won the NC in the 60's !
AND NEITHER SHOULD YA'LL !
!!!
I will say this,.... Croom will come closer than the big O !
I would say this again tomorrow,... if they swapped jobs tonight !
I'd just be rootin for O, if this happened !
Have at it !
Rip Em !

Yep, there was quite a little stretch in the last decade that UM fans referred to "Death Valley" in Redstick as "Vaught Hemingway South". We played better there than LSU did. For a while, the Rebs were thinking about giving up our home game every other year and just playing in BR every year.
As to the Tide and Bigwater's point that UM did not play them as much back in the 50s and 60s as MSU did, that was because the Bear was ducking Vaught.
He was sceeerrt.
