new pup

Well I went and did it. Today sent in a deposit on a new pup. I have been wanting one for a while and I just kept talking myself out of spending the jack. But now looks like I'll be heading south to LA middle of next month to pick up a CHOCOLATE female. I know, I know, I should have gotten a black dog but she is out of GRHRCH Dakota's Cajun Roux & a SHR out of Gator pionts lines. Health clearences look good so hopfully it is money well spent.

Hey, don't let them smack ya around too hard about choco dogs. The highest point dog in HRC is a Chocolate dog. Glenn Dye's chocolate female is one of the finest dogs you'll ever see run.

I expected a little brown dog trash talk. My first lab was a choc. female back before I ran hunt test and duck hunted. She was a great dog and picked up the first duck I ever shot down. She got out of the pen one day (she could climb like a freaken monkey) and somebody must have picked, looked for her for 6 months but never saw her again. She was the whole reason for me getting my next dog and thus started the ball rolling in my obsesion for the deal. I have been wanting another choc female since.

I'll be getting one of the pups out of that litter myself. I've been waiting for a Roux pup for about a year now. Hopefully they are going to be some great dogs.

I have two chocs and really like my male who I have raised from a pup. he is about to go to school to work on some things and is two, but I still like him alot. I inherited the female about two months ago from a guy who did not have a place for her. And yes you guessed it. My male hung one in yesturday, so I guess i will be reciving a few more in a couple of months. I guess i should have taught him about the birds and the bees. If any of you want an inexpensive lab in a few months let me know. I will not be trying to get rich but i would like to see them go to good homes and be hunted if at all possible. She has never been hunted, but he has and he can't get enough.

Why are Black dogs better than Chocolate or Yellow? Just curious...we have a female Chesapeake and a male black lab.

Generally speaking black labs are better because black is the dominant color. In other words, you have to try to get a choco' or yello'. When you breed for straight talent, skills, and ability you will always eventually get a black dog if you didn't care about color.

Generally speaking yello' is better than brown because it's much easier to breed for yello'.

With that said, there are some great brown and yellow dogs out there.

With that said 90% of the national FT champions are black, 8% are yellow, and 2% are brown.

Same thing for horses, most of the time the Kentucky Derby winner will be brown, followed by black, followed by gray.

Good well bred labs are good well bred labs, no matter what the color. The reason chocs got a bad reputation is due to the fact that chocolates became very fashionable. When this happened, people began breeding any chocolate to any chocolate, with no consideration for good breeding. Its takes generations of good breeding to develope a good line. But , a good line can be destoyed by one bad breeding. If you have a good breeding line, the pups will generally be good, no matter what the color of the dogs. I was one of those who only wanted another block, and was lookiing for one when I found one chocolate in a litter of well bred dogs. I ended up choosing the only chocolate out of this litter because I felt like he was the best pup available in a good breeding, contrary to my misconceptions about brown dogs. It's a good thing I did, because my dog is Dakota's Cajun Roux. By the way, the breeder thought he would have to keep this chocolate dog because of the bad rap. Several people passed this pup up even though he was uncanny even at 6 weeks of age, just because he chocolate. Go for the best breedings whatever color!

The percentages given relative to blacks, yellows, and chocolates another indivual gave you are accurate. But here is something else you might consider. This year at the Norht Texas Fall Grand, the percentage of chocolates that were entered and passed the grand were greater than the percentages of the other two colors.

I also have one of Cody's pups. Went 2 for 2 in started this weekend @ 5 months old. Got to be one of top HRC lines going!!! You will be very happy with your pup. I have a buddy in Tenn. that just bred his HRCH female to Roux-should be unstoppable pups.
