2005 Turkey Season - so far

Postby Deadeye » Thu Mar 24, 2005 12:29 pm

This was my second time out this year hunting.. scouted for the last 3 weeks prior to opening. Family vacation to Disney World affected my hunting so far... got back yesterday, went this morning and laid one to rest at 6:00am sharp. Beautiful thing. I love it when they come in strutting and gobbling....

Deadeye... had turkey cleaned and was at work @ 0730. Now that's doing it right.

Story goes like this:

I didn't get this bird roosted Wednesday afternoon, so I was hunting blind Thursday morning. As always happens, you walk to where you "think" they are roosted, wait til the songbirds wake up and then let out a hoot. As luck would have it, a pair of wood ducks squealed and he gobbled... freaking 3/4 of a mile away.. so I took off running. I knew where he was roosted, but it took 10 minutes to get there.. as soon as I snuck in there good, I saw him fly down, thought I spooked him. I waited and he gobbled... I sat down, hit a good raspy yelp and he cut me off.

A hen also answered me between him and me, but she was still on the limb. He was only about 80 yards from me, over a little hump and then, there he was. All blowed up going right at me. At about 50 yards, 2 hens flew down behind him, he turned to look back at them and I cut hard at him to keep his attention. He walked about 10 more yards and held up fer a couple of minutes, gobbling and strutting. Finally, without seeing a hen, he turned around, came out of strut and proceeded to walk away. I decided if he was gonna run from the law, well then, I was going to take drastic measures. I let loose of a wad of Federal Premium #4's from 44 yards and rolled his butt up. I was out there standing on his neck and my watched beeped 6:00am.

Prettiest thing you ever seen....

Deadeye... will be getting the grease hot tonight.

That's awesome. Wish it would happen like that more often for me. I'm finally gonna get out in the morning. Damn school schedule and untimely sinus infection have kept me penned up. Yall wish me luck.
