MSU assistant interviews for head coaching position

By Ian R. Rapoport

STARKVILLE — Mississippi State assistant basketball coach Robert Kirby hs interviewed for the head coaching position at the University of Louisiana-Monroe, ULM athletic director Bobby Stead said today.

Kirby has interviewed for several head coaching jobs over the past few years, including the Jackson State job in the spring of 2003. The Louisiana interview was Friday.

He is considered the top assistant on the staff of coach Rick Stansbury.

The ULM job opened last week when Mike Vining resigned after 24 seasons. The Indians finished 8-19 last season.

Stead said Kirby was recommended to him by "people in the business" and that he was impressive in the interview.

"(Kirby) seemed like he had a plan, told me his philosophy and was incredibly well prepared," Stead said. "We visited with him, he expressed interest, and that's the point we're at now. Frankly, we're fortunate he was interested in us at all."

According to Stead, he will have interviewed three other candidates this week, though there may be more interviews when he travels to the Final Four next weekend in St. Louis. He said he will have a decision before April 13.

Kirby, who has 22 years of coachin experience, did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
