#7 Mississippi State 9, #2 LSU 2
HOOVER, Ala. (AP) -- Thomas Berkery was 4-for-4 with two RBI's in Mississippi State's 9-to-2 victory over LSU today in the Southeastern Conference tournament opener.
The seventh-seeded Bulldogs scored five runs on six singles in the first inning and didn't get an extra base hit until a double by Berkery.
Alan Johnson pitched 6-2/3 scoreless innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the seventh against the Tigers (38-19).
Mississippi State plays the South Carolina-Tennessee winner in the double-elimination tournament. The Tigers will play that game's loser.
The Bulldogs chased LSU starter Lane Mestepey after just two-thirds of an inning, his shortest start of the season.
Mississippi State added four more runs over the third, fourth and fifth innings on seven more singles off LSU reliever Jordan Faircloth, taking an 8-nothing lead.
Mississippi State reliever Saunders Ramsey came in with the bases loaded in the seventh and recorded the final out, pitching 2-1/3 scoreless innings.
POSTGAME QUOTES
LSU Head Coach Smoke Laval
"We did not start out tough today. Lane got four runs fast, so from then on we were just trying to stop the bleeding. We were not on the run today and Mississippi State was. They refused to give in today, and played better we did."
Ryan Patterson, Left Fielder
"Johnson was really good today. He hit the right spots, and kept making pitches that kept getting us off balance today. He kept the ball down better today than Friday. He hit his spots and changed his speeds well. He mixed in balls today that we did not see on Friday night."
Mississippi State Head Coach Ron Polk
"This is the 23rd time that I have had a team in the SEC Tournament, and I think that this is the first time I have ever had at 10 a.m. If they all go this way for us, I think I want to play more at 10 a.m. I don't think my guys wanted to wake up tomorrow at 6 a.m. so they went out and did what they could to get a victory. We found a lot of real estate in the first few innings, and I am proud of my guys for getting A.J. (pitcher Alan Johnson) some runs. We are looking forward to playing Tennessee or South Carolina tomorrow."
Alan Johnson, Pitcher
"I went out there and threw strikes. When we played them on Friday in Starkville, they didn't hit me very well, so I wanted to just throw strikes and let my defense play behind me. In this big ball park, I was just throwing it down the middle, and my teammates got me enough run support."
