what would be right?
Ok im pretty new here.
This isnt a question for me its for my cousin.
He is a duck hunter that goes almost every weekend and he is really wanting a gun dog.The problem is we arent very wealthy so we cant afford to buy a expensive puppy then put it through training. He wants to get a started dog so he would be able to hunt it this season.
My question is what would be better for him?A young started dog.Or a older finished dog?
IM not sure on how prices go for started or finished dogs but he cant really afford sumthing really expensive his parents says that he wants it so he has to pay for it.He would prefer a female also.
So if yall could help us out by answering this it would be greatly appreciated.
ALso if someone has a started or finished dog that is for sale it would also help.He isnt planning on running it in field trials or anything just a weekend warrior and maybe a hunt test or two.
Thanks

I hope to be at least half the person my dog thinks i am.
I don't know what he can afford , but odds are he's not gonna like the prices he finds when he starts shopping around for a started dog , much less a finished dog . Option # 3 , buy a decent pup and train him , if he's been hunting without a dog then surely he can make it one more year til he gets pup ready for the blind .
I have a seasoned dog that I have probably 600 in.
Do what I did, get a decent pup, and train him/her your self.

Just to give him an idea, I had over 1000.00 in Nash before I ever saw him. I had a guy offer me 10k for him this duck season and if I would have taken it, I would have been in the hole. A good started dog is going to run any where from 1500-2500 while a true finished dog is goin to run an easy 5k but in the long run buying a started or finished dog is the cheaper of the two routes. It does not take long to get in deep $$$$$ when you consider the price of the pup, Training at 400 a month and idf you are going to do the training yourself then you can consider about half of that not including hid food and Vet bills. It is not a cheap game to play. But if you decided to step up, don't let the price of the puppy be the deciding factor. You can get some really nice pups right knoe for around 500-1000. Good luck Hope this helps

heck,my first dog I got for 200 ears of corn. I didn't train him like i should have. sit, stay, here. But that sucker loves the water and loves to retrieve a duck, therefore he's a hunter. If he's young, like I was at the time, he'll think it's the best thing in the world if he can get it to fetch a dummy. You can worry later about the $$$$ for a dog if you ever want to run in the games. I just got a pup that was $900, but i had the money and i got the time to train. [/list]

I put just under $13K in my two last year alone....That includes vet, food, everything dog related....................The actual price for a dog is the least of your worries..........
But to answer your question.....
Travis has some young dogs coming up that will be good'uns come Fall. Talk to Goosebruce on this board.

Me and a buddy went up to Jesse Sheppards place yesterday to train with him, he has a yellow female for sale right now that has two seasoned passes. I think that he is selling it for the owner, wanting 500 bucks. Thats as good a deal as ive ever heard for a dog that has had 5 months of pro training. Let me know if you are interested. tk
