suggestions...darn coots!

Postby jasonmcc » Thu Dec 01, 2005 11:25 am

im hunting a large pond thats always full of 200-300 coot. well every morning and every evening i see lots of mallards come flying in and they dont respond at all to calling and only seem to land in next to the coot. well the coot are never within shooting range on any of the blinds. Any suggestions on getting some of these mallards to fly my way?

Do the un thinkable.
BUY COOT DECOYS!
That way you and Bigwater will be the 2 people in the world that have actually bought those ugly things.

We have that problem and put a group of coot decoys on the outskirt of our spread. I look at them as confidence decoys. But when the gumbo pot gets low, load up on them COOTS!

We got the same prob with one of my spots first you need to get to where the coots are restin. try not to use a blind but get well hide from and get as many coot decoys as possible and just a couple duck decoys with em. Just do exactly what you see the ducks doing "landing in the coots" thats why i mix em not put em to the side. We use bout 6 dz coot decoys.

More than anything, the ducks are keying on the movement made by the ducks...wouldn't matter if it was coots, mallards, or pouledous. Get some motion in your decoys. Use a jerk string with several decoys hooked on. Keep the water rippling.

Has anyone here actually tried pullin the feathers out of a coot breast? I only tried once and I couldn't do it. Maybe I just had a supercoot that was tough. I'm sure we've all had gotten a tough piece of tough supercoot at some point in time.
