Weather Watch (Ice Storm memories)

I meant to post this last week; but with this weekend's weather looking rough, I decided to ask about the weather.

Anyone care to share memories of the 1994 Ice Storm that hit pretty much all of MS above Hwy. 82. It was about this time of year and I remember florist trying to "remember" Valentine's Day so they could make their $$$ for the year. I was a senior in high school in Greenville and I woke up thinking it was an ordinary day. The sounds of trees buckling under the weight of the ice still stands as a beautiful, yet tragic memory. Honestly the sight of the storm was amazing (ice covered trees and objects), BUT when it melted and clean-up began . . . it sucked. I think we were without power for a week.

Any other thoughts from people around the state?

yea pecans rather sucked the next two years and you could not move in the woods the next year for all the down tops.

I remember loosing power in Greenville and watching the trees fall. The strangest part of the whole deal was listening to the popping sound at night while the city was shutdown due to the power outage. Had a buddy that lived about a 1/4 mile from me and he and his dad got their shotguns and shot the ice out of their trees with #9 shot before they broke...that was fun to watch! It seemed fun to cook outside on the propane grill and not go to school, but that wore off after one day of clearing trees in the yard and off of the house. I was a Junior in HS in Greenville that year, so we probably know each other.

Junior in High School in Clarksdale. I remember being out of school 3 weeks and out of power until 2 days after school started back.

yep.. i remember catching perch below the spillway and the mist freeze'n on the side of the boat

My middle son was born on Feb-15, we were without power for 17 days, had to heat the bottles on a butane heater, one day to always remember...

yeap i remember that week, worked at a rental store and spent the whole week working on kerosine heaters. I must have replaced about a 150 wicks that week.

I forgot about people shooting trees to break the ice. I really wish I would have taken pictures of the scene. But like always, we banded together to help others out.

I was still in South TX at that time, you know the place that never freezes and doesn't have tress big enought to worry about breaking,

After Katrina, power outages took on a whole new meaning.. Since 1994 there are so many more things that rely on electricity than back then....It really makes you a slave to the power company doesn't it

I remember too, I was in 8th grade and had an old 200 honda three wheeler....boy you could sure do doughnuts on that thing. Most impressive thing was tying a ski rope to the back of it and slingin people on the knee board, I also figured out how to ski on rubber boots on top of the ice. I stayed sore for about a week after that, but it sure was fun.

The way the weather looks we won't see that this year because it will probably warm up too fast for the ice to last more than 1/2 day.

I was a sophmore in college at the time. Me and a buddy took these two girls to my dad's house. He had a generator and gas heat. We were kicked back watching movies. Not ten minutes into the movie, the generator ran out of gas. And since there was no electricity anywhere, you couldn't just go buy gas. Eventually we siphoned some out of a vehicle and we were set again. Then not ten minutes later, the generated stoped again. We go out and check and the damn thing had slung a rod because it didn't have any oil in it. I guess when you are young and horny, checking things like oil and gas are not the first priority.

Not long after that, my dad gets home, so that just put a damper so our hot hot night with the girls was pretty much done in at that point.

I was in Vail, Co trying to get home. That storm had come through the rockies and we were the last van they let through Vail Pass that night. We made it to Denver and scrambled to get a flight out to Memphis. We left Denver around 8 that night with a stopover in Minneapolis. We landed in the twin cities and they said our flight to Memphis had been cancelled. They put us up for night and left Minneapolis at 5 am headed to memphis. We landed in Memphis that morning and it was sleeting when we landed. I put the truck in 4wd high and headed home. Went to sleep and woke up the next morning to the ice storm. After all the trouble getting home I wish we would have just stayed in Co. We were without power in Shelby for 18 days.

I was on the Coast then, and thank God! Hear the National News talking about it (the only time I've EVER heard people from Bolivar County being interviewed by national media) & my parents got my grandparents out of it, cause they were SOL on power for over 3 weeks!

Just east of Ruleville we were out of power for a little over 3 weeks. I was in Jackson at the Dixie National showin cows for 4-H. We got a call that our farm shop had burned to the ground so we packed up and headed home. Very next mornin i awoke to a loud rumble of nothin but trees crackin. SOOOOO we lost a bunch of trees, 2 Combines, a pickup and a '57 Chevy that my Dad used to race. yeah that winter sucked balls.

My 3 roommates in college at MSU got arrested that night at the casinos in greenville for gambling underage. GPD couldn't book them cause all the power was out and they let them go.. One of them won over a grand. We were all from greenville so hopefully they would have been able to get out of it. Funny though.
