I was the same as you! One set of eyes and if something goes wrong there is nothing you can do. They even gave me valium BEFORE the procedure started to assist me in my nervousness. The lady that went before me could not even walk out of the room afterwards because of the valium she took. Two people had to carry her to her car. Well, I was so nervous that the valium never kicked in. The doctor was amazed that after I was through with the procedure that I was perfectly OK. Now, the second part of the story. My nerves settled down after the procedure and they gave me some sleeping bills to take right then so that they would start working in about an hour after I got home. Well, we drove 15 minutes to the house and I went inside to call my mother, she wanted an update, and while on the phone with her I fell off of the stool in the kitchen.

Trust me, I was probably as nervous as anyone could be and it is understandable. Once the procedure is done you will say what I said "I should have done this sooner! This was a piece of cake!" Just do your research, find a doctor you trust and ask all the questions up front. Me, I went with Dr. Cook who has taught many of the doctors here in the state how to perform the LASIK procedure. He is not just an optometrist that performs LASIK; he is an eye surgeon/ophthalmologist. So, he knows his way around the eye and knows what real surgery is. For me, I felt more comfortable with someone that knows eye surgery rather than just someone that gives eye exams, but also knows how to perform LASIK.

Some info on Dr. Cook:

On May 31, 1997, Dr. James W. Cook, M.D., F.A.C.S. became the first ophthalmologist to operate a LaserVision site in Mississippi to correct high degrees of nearsightedness and astigmatism. Dr. Cook was certified to use the VISX Laser on April 18th. and 19th., 1997 at Schumpert Medical Center in Shreveport, LA. Dr. Cook also received training on the VISX Laser from Dr. Donald Johnson in Vancouver, Canada in 1995. The VISX Laser is the first FDA approved laser that will correct astigmatism as well as myopia and hyperopia. Dr. Cook has been performing RK (Radial Keratotomy) since 1993 when he was trained by Dr. Assil in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Cook has performed over 4,000 RK procedures. In October, 1998, Dr. Cook began performing the LASIK procedure. He was trained and certified by Dr. William Hart of Lake Charles, LA. Dr. Cook has performed over 2000 Excimer Laser procedures since 1997. Dr. Cook had the Sunrise LTK laser procedure done on himself in September 2000,and since his reading vision was greatly improved with this procedure, he purchased the first and only Sunrise LTK Hyperion Laser in the state.

Dr. Cook graduated from Tulane Medical School in 1974 and did a pediatric internship at Charity Hospital of New Orleans from from 1974 to 1975. He served at the U.S.A.F Clinic in Okinawa, Japan from 1975 to 1977. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at Tulane from 1977 to 1980. He has been in private practice in Vicksburg, MS since 1980. Dr. Cook was Board Certified in 1982 and has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1988. Other pertinent facts regarding Dr. Cook's experience are as follows:

First ophthalmologist in Vicksburg to perform "no stitch" cataract surgery.
Only ophthalmologist in this area performing corneal transplants.
15,000 eye surgeries since 1980.
4,000 refractive RK and Laser operations since 1993.
2,000 Excimer Laser procedures since 1997.
Uses VISX EXCIMER LASER.

Dr. Cook has staff privileges at the following area hospitals:

Parkview Regional Medical Center, Vicksburg, MS
Vicksburg Medical Center, Vicksburg, MS
Kings Daughters Hospital, Yazoo City, MS
River Oaks Hospital, Jackson, MS
Richland Parish Hospital, Delhi, LA
Surgicare of Jackson, Jackson, MS

Well, I just got pushed back to June 12 for surgery. :x

I woke up with head and chest congestion yesterday morning. I called the doc earlier and she said don't bring my butt down there, might have a coughing spell on the operating table and mess everything up.....just my damn luck I guess. :(

I'd rather be safe than sorry. One sneeze while that laser is going and no telling what might could happen.

It just sucks that you have to wait another 3 weeks.
