The media needs to get off the race issue with Katrina.

Postby Duckdawg10 » Mon Aug 28, 2006 6:58 pm

Somebody needs to punch Brian Williams(NBC) in the mouth. He is the NBC nightly news guy. He is doing a special right now on New Orleans and Katrina. He is making the entire thing a race issue. The media has no idea. He even talked about the fact that the levees may have been purposely blown up. Why do they not go to the MS coast and show how people do things for themselves? I have been to both places and it is like night and day. The coast was destroyed(leveled), but you can see people out in the street working everyday. New Orleans had very high water and the people stayed there expecting the government to bail them out. When I went through NO, I did not see a single person working in their yard, or working on their house. I saw a few sitting on the corner drinking a forty. When I went to the coast, I saw people everywhere! WORKING! HELPING THEMSELVES! Sorry, just wanted to rant.

I saw that too duckdawg and i feel exactly the same way you do, everything is a racism issue now. When a natural disaster becomes racist things are really getting out of hand. I have been living in Gulfport for about 7 months now and the attitude of the people down here is really good. They are working hard wo get things back to normal and even makes things better. Perhaps if New Orleans had elected a new mayor that would actually do something they would be better off.

Its sad that the media never shows what happened in MS vs. NO, but its uplifting to Mississippians get up and help each other out.

The bottom line is this: When the levees are breached and threaten thousands of American citizens, you don't argue about who's gonna go and do what. You got and get 'em. You argue and fuss about who should have done what when they're all out of harm's way. You don't leave 'em there for four days, sleeping in their own schit and piss with no food or water only to wake up next to a corpse that until two days ago was their grandmother.

I was also peeved about the lack of coverage on the recovery in Mississippi. Though I suspect it has more to do with the desire of the media to sensationalize than it does with race. I understand that New Orleans is the big story. It's a major metropolitan area and everything there went horribly wrong. But the storm leveled the entire Mississippi Gulf Coast and there is no mention one year later?

And finally, where is the cry for coastal wetlands protection? Never before has the need for preservation of coastal wetlands in Louisiana been more amply demonstrated, and broadcasted into every single household in America, than it was with Katrina. But here we sit, one year later and nobody is talking about it.

It is so much easier for the media to look at bad situations than good ones.
I agree 100%. They should be helping themselves, like good Mississippians, but then they wouldn't get to be on the news like this.

The government has been "bailing" them out for years. They're waiting to be "bailed-out" again!

It appears that one BIG reasons alot of proverty level people black, white, brown and Hienz57 had one reason NOT to leave the city...Where else was their checks to be sent. Remember the storm happened at the end of a month within a few days those checks would of been in the post office box. Why not attempt to ride out the storm and get your checks. Is better than waiting in a long line for a reissue of the check. They did not know about the 2 grand fema cards at that time.

It is called learned helplessness(sp). Katrina was an example on a massive scale of how welfare is ineffective and only masks the larger problem of the people. People turn it into a race issue because they can. We have no one left to fight for us. We have no NAAWP. We will only be taken advantage of as long as we allow it.

mottlet, you are right on brother. I watched the Williams piece and the Anderson Cooper one on CNN, both were only about Norleans. I just bought a house in Gulfport so I was waiting for them to show the great rebuilding efforts in Miss. Never happened.

Now sitting out here in California, if I didn't know better, I would think the entire gulf coast is still not being rebuilt. What they don't say is that the states that have thier head screwed on straight (namely Mississippi) are doing great. Just because the idiots in NO re-elected Nagin and he obviously is one of them, an idiot, nothing will happen. I predicted it the day he was re-elected. I must have the power to see the future.

My accountant just asked me why I bought a home in Gulfport, hadn't I been watching the news about Katrina aftermath. I just told him Gulfport is not NO.

The issue is not race; it is class.

Totally different class of citizen one place to another. One with strong sense of belonging and producing. The other with a long history of control of their lives being with someone else and allowing themselves to become helpless.

So what do the sef-inflicted helpless do when trouble besets them? Of course, blame someone else because I didn't make any decisions so it can't be my fault.

When you produce nothing (except more children who become second class citizens, there is no way to have a sense of worth. I used to think there was hope as each generation was better educated and more productive. But what I have seen is that, as Blacks become educated and productive, they isolate themselves from the non-productive Blacks and want nothing to do with them. So, you do have more Blacks being more productive, but we have way more falling into the low class, non-productive, consumer only class.

And no one is brave enough to say "enough" and take action to address the problem. The Blacks want do it, and they want stand for anyone else to do it.

As frustrated as I get with the influx of Mexicans, at least they want to work.

I agree with every point you made crow, except this one. Once they are legal and figure out the system, they are just as bad...look at Southern California;Texas. Not that our white race is without our faults either, seein more and more of us milkin the system seems like also. God help this country.

That is the issue right there. I watched the show last night in discuss. I have got a horrible view of our mainstream media, they are just a bunch of left wing nuts that want to blame everyone and have no solutions to the problem.

Thank goodness for SupertalkMS. They have at least balanced reporting..

I have a kid who works for me here that I hired 2 months after Katrina..he was living in New Orleans, he says for 3 days before the storm that radio stations and TV stations were running non stop saying "if you do not leave the city, we will NOT help you....if you stay there is a 98% chance you will be killed or drowned in the aftermath" ...... a friend of mine from Gulfport (used to be my neighbor when we lived there) said 2 days before the storm that Civil defense was going door to door south of the railroad tracks asking if you were staying or going....if you said you were staying, they took your ID and in permanent marker put your name and social sec number on your arm so "when your body floats up we know who you were" ..... now i do not know about you but it doesnt take basic skills 101 to tell me it is time to get the *&^% out of dodge!!!

Strange how you do not hear about how EVERYONE was warned in advance to leave..... Mandatory means get out!!!

Wonder what Eddie Murphy would say about that one?? :?
