My nine year old cousin shoots a 7mm-08 and does just fine with it, and like many others on this board have said, my uncle has started using it some too. He killed a deer with it at 275 steps last year, so I would say it would make a 200 yd shot fairly easy....good gun for youth and women in my opinion.

My wife shoots a .270 Win........130gr.....no problems. She shot a .243 in Africa and said the bullet deflected off the slightest blade of grass......so she lost faith in it, right off.......has shot a .270 ever since.

Another cartridge you might consider is the 257 Roberts. 117gr bullet good tragectory, light recoil....good deer cartridge. But we're both 'old-school'.

I haven't shot a 7mm-08 but am familiar with and shoot the 308Win.......seems like the 7mm-08 would be a nice, light round with decent tragectory and mild recoil.

I have never understood this concept, can someone explain to me how the size of the bullets matters when it hits a branch or limb.. Just does not make sense to me? Not trying to start a caliber war, just want to know the logic behind this.. IMO the only thing a larger bullet has over a smaller bullet would be knock down power..Seems to me that the faster the bullet, the better the ability to cut thru an object instead of deflect.

I hunted with a model 7 in 7-08 for a lotta years, my dad gave it to me when i was eight...shot handloaded 140 grain partitions, killed lots of deer and hogs with it...i sold it about five years ago, regretted it ever since!

I'm gonna second the 257 Roberts, I've got one that I love...real polite little caliber. The "bob" packs enough punch and is very nice on your shoulder. The 7mm-08 is a great round as well, but pops your shoulder a bit more....

I doubt it all the present-day sports writer hype is in favor of the short mags on the Outdoor Channel. Nobody knows who Elmer Keith, Jack O'Conner, and P.O. Ackley was .......or Jim Carmichael, Jimmy Robinson, and Gene Hill for that matter.

'Wonder what Jimmy's forecast would be, this year. Probably 'Doom and Gloom' because he would NEVER stoop to writing something that was false, just to pump money into the waterfowl hunting 'industry' such as is so prevelant, these days.

I happen to shoot a 7mm Mag.

I'd recommend a 7mm-08 or a .280.

I have no liking for a .243 or .270, both are woundmasters.

REmmy makes a managed recoil for the 3006 and 270. I don't know how the ballistics are but the lessen the kick supposedly.

the only reason a .270 would be a "woundmaster" compared to a .280 is improper bullet selection/poor construction or a sorry shooter, i bet there's not 2% difference in the ballistics of those calibers

.308 Endless handloading capabilities. Decent ballistics out to 300 yards. Very little recoil. Tons of factory loads available. Just about every rifle manufactured is available in this caliber. Plenty of energy to giterdun well past 200 yards. I own one that my little sister started hunting with when she was about 14 or so and she has killed a pile of bucks with it over the last 6 or 7 years. Only two deer that she has killed have taken a step and they only went about 30 yards. Of course this is mostly because she is an excellent shot but, if you hit em in the right spot the 308 devestating. I have killed plenty of deer with it also with the same results. Got a 7mm 08 too. No complaints with the 7-08 but i personally like the .308 alot better.
