Travis, heartguard has tried to hee haw around with us as far as paying for the treatments, but I think they are going to do it. They are claiming they have never seen this before where the dog has actually been on the medicine every month. We may need to join efforts and let them know that we know of other labs in the same situation in order to get compensated although it will never make up for having to put the dogs down for the winter and not let them hunt.

come spring, I plan to stay with interceptor and add the liquid ivermectin dose middle of the month. double cover, and still have treatment insurance from a company if we do get em. don't know what else to do. maybe screen-in the freakin kennel
DuckChaser,
You may want to make sure by "supplementing" with another medication it doesn't "void" the contract of covering for treatment from the company.
just thinking out loud....

Were any of these dogs acting different or did yall just do a test ? Do yall have them checked periodically? What if any are the symptoms of heartworms?

Yearly checkup. They asked my wife if she wanted to pay an extra 8 bucks and have him checked for heartworms, and of course she said yes. Glad it was her, cause I would have never had him checked. Never thought twice about the medicine not working. Has anybody had to go through the treatment before? Found out last night that his treatment is going to be for a heavy load and take 60 days.

Only in extreme / well developed cases.
Most of the time you won't ever know they have them.

Very important.
Since the usual method of heartworm treatment is an IV injection of arsenic, which in and of it's self can and has killed many a dog, they have to be in a kennel and, for the most part, immobile.
The way our vet always explained it to people is that when the worms die, some / most of them windup in the lungs where they end up causing a mild case of pneumonia. You really have to make the dog sick to get them better.
Looking for 2 duck calls from Dominic Serio of Greenwood (ones for Novacaine)

Take this for what it's worth. I've been using ZIMECTRIN (paste form of ivomectin for horses) in 50lb. doses on my dogs (10-12) for the past 6 years with 0 incident of worms. Another pro-friend of mine has been on the stuff for over 15 years with 0 incidents of worms. A 50 lb. dose is like 30 times more potent than a single heart guard or interseptor tablet. Ivomec is very hard to over dose with as well. Our vet (who sells Heart Guard) asked me what I was on. When I told him I was using the Ivomec paste, he said "Good" "I'll never see any problems from your dogs". Besides heart worms, it also kills bots and other intestinal parasites. One tube cost about 9 bucks and will do about 20 dogs. With the horrible skeeter problem this year, I'm glad to have been on it. I hope everything works out for yall and your dogs.

I believe I'll be using that ZIMECTRIN for now on. 9 bucks a tube!! that's awesome!!
My dog has Heartworms, she going in for treatment after the season. The vet says she's barely positive and could live a productive long life with the few she has but I don't trust that there will only be a few forever, I'm treating her FEB 1!!
