LA Goose season v. MS Goose Season

Anyone know why LA has such a short season and 1 bird limit on Honkers; whereas MS season last the entire duck season with a 3 bird limit? There is certainly no shortage of honkers where I hunt in LA.

I believe it is because of the population in MS. In the mid to late 80's the MDWFP went to the north and brought a $#!+ load of geese back and gave them to farmers and local private ponds. They were never hunted and even when the season was open they stayed where they were fed and still not hunted. The geese are nuisance geese now and hard as hell to get rid of.

Probably because they know not many people are or CAN hunt them because of where they are!!!

It actually was in the early 70's and the first pinioned giant Canadas were brought to Noxubee refuge. I used to go to the overlook and watch those suckers...I thought they were great. IWhen they had the first bunch fledged and flew around, I'd go over to Lokafoma and lay in the sage and they would fly over so low that you could feel the wind from them.

They ain't so much fun any more!

It is down-right dangerous on fishponds during nesting season. I've had them get so close as to touch me on the back of the head with their wingtips when I got too close to the nest.

They are fun to watch grow, though. Equally as fun to eat!

As others have said, it is different geese. Most of the Canadas killed in MS are giants that are residents. Most of those in Louisiana are Hutchinsons, and aren't residents, but migratory. They are definetly getting more plentiful in SW LA, but still there is a very short season and low limit. One day maybe it will change.

Jeff is correct and it can change as we are getting more of the smaller sub species of Canadas,(Richardson Canadas) in southwest La.

I wrote the LDWF commission back in 7/06 about this very subject regarding seeing more Canadas and only having a 9 day season on them.
I put a petition for a longer season on this site and 2 others and with some of your help, I submitted the petition with a letter and emails to committee members and got granted a 16 day Canada goose season this year.
If we unite as one, Things like this are possible if the species numbers are holding steady or increasing. We will try for more days every year and hope to get even a longer season on these birds.
