You're doing the right thing by asking for help and not a handout. Much as some folks here try to disprove it, nobody ever killed anything on the internet. You're gonna learn by doing. You're gonna learn faster by going with someone that does it better than you. Maybe somebody'll help you out with that, maybe they won't. If not, just jump into it. Public land is a good spot to try, but it's also a good place to experience stuff that'll chase you from the sport for good. Don't overlook private options, especially in your part of the state where duck hunting hasn't become big business. Chances are that you know somebody that has a beaver pond in the woods on their property or some such thing. Chances are also good that you can at least go kill some wood ducks there simply by asking.

One word of caution, if you're next question goes something like this, "Does anybody know any good areas to hunt on such and such public land..." don't ask it. Ask for help, not a handout.

While I've been duck hunting since I was very young, I recently moved from Mississippi to Virginia. When I joined a VA board and simply asked if anyone in the area wanted to meet up and shoot some sporting clays so that I could meet some folks, the reception I got was less than warm. Just ignore the BS and try to learn what you can. Don't know how much help I can be from a thousand miles away, but feel free to send me a private message with any questions you can think of. This acctually would be a great idea. i met them in tupelo at the outdoor show. even though the head guide there whiped my butt in the calling competition he was an aweseome dude. They are pretty reasonably priced and hunt some prime land in talahatchie county. Give Curt Brown a call at 662-791-9359

Shoot me a PM, I live near Pontotoc and, unlike most of the residents here, don't mind giving some direction to a new guy. The way I look at it, somebody took me along years ago, no reason not to pass it forward.

I agree you'll want to find your own "spots", but you can waste a year just getting general directions.

1st time hunters huh?? Welcome to the most wonderful hobby you'll ever become addicted to. Well couple tips, DO NOT sky bust, and leave the call at home till you learn the basics. A good decoy spead aint worth a crap if you stink at calling, and good decoy spread is better without a call sometimes. I agree, you need to try the WMA's a little tough sometimes but we all had to cut our teeth somewhere at sometime or another. Mahanna is a good one to go to, watch the crowds, best to go during the week, weekends are like doveshoots sometimes. The lakes along the river are good if you have a reliable boat, stay out of them when the weather is bad, if it starts to get bad, get the hell out FAST! If you have a good boat, your opportunity of finding ducks is pretty good, just get out this weekend or next and scout A LOT!!!
