Unidentified members of the Oxford Police Department have allegedly been involved in a violation of the law concerning spotlighting and shooting deer, The Oxford EAGLE has learned.
OPD officials would not give the identity of any of its officers involved nor any details of the alleged incident.
“I can’t make any comment on that,†Assistant Chief of Police Mike Martin said. “We have an internal affairs investigation going on.
“Until our investigation is complete, I can only confirm that there is an internal affairs investigation.â€
The individuals involved were allegedly arrested by a representative of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries & Parks.
Calls to the DWFP in Jackson were referred to Lt. Col. Steve Adcock, the agency’s assistant chief of enforcement with the Law Enforcement Division. Adcock was in meetings this morning and did not return calls by press time.
There is no set timeline for OPD internal affairs investigations.
The process begins with the investigation being conducted, and then a summary or synopsis would be made and presented to personnel officials and other appropriate city officials. After city officials determine what action they will take, OPD officials could then — if any action is taken — comment further on the situation.
According to the DWFP Web site, “anyone who hunts or kills any deer with any lighting device is subject to a maximum fine of $5,000, five days in jail, and the loss of hunting, fishing and trapping privileges for three years. This does not apply to a deer killed in an accident with a motor vehicle. Any equipment used to hunt or kill deer at night with a lighting device that is subject to seizure is considered contraband property and will be seized by the enforcement officer. This equipment is subject to forfeiture and may become property of the State of Mississippi.â€
