Postby bigduck » Mon Dec 11, 2006 2:38 pm

Anyone tried to afternoon hunt this year in MS? We've been killing more birds in the afternoon in TN and was just wanderin about it down there.

You can monk up a fine duck hole really bad by shooting it in the afternoon. I try not to do it as a general rule.
So many ducks, so little time....

I typically don't roost shoot or afternoon hunt. As a matter of fact, it has probably been 5 or 10 years since I have done so, because of the reason mentioned above, you can screw up a hole bad.

However, this year, I have a hole that is close to the delta, but not in the delta just off a river that is flooded (beavers dammed up a creek). It looks just like a hole in the delta, buck brush, cypress, a few oaks, etc...

It is holding around 500 to 1000 wood ducks at night. They look like skeeters. It is also holding a fair amount of big ducks (~ 300 to 400). Morning hunts are nothing special other than watching that many ducks get up and fly with purpose away from that hole. (the hole is ~ 100 acres). I am thinking about a good roost shoot before January. Then I will let it rest until we have enough cold weather to lock up the north delta.

im not talking about shooting a roost hole...im talking about ducks flying between 1 and 4 in the afternoon...thats when the majority of our killin is happenin...hunted the other day and had 2 ducks before noon...saw maybe 100...ended up limiting out with 8 limits by 3:30. It's just been different here this year...not really sure why

We could have had a good afternoon hunt the other day if wed set up right. I said AFTERNOON hunt, not roost shoot. BIG difference b/w huntin afternoon feedin holes and shootin roostin holes. I am a firm believer in leavin the roostin holes alone.

I NEVER hunt in the afternoon on my holes until the last weekend of the season.

I know of a prime example of how afternoon hunting can turn a good camp into a not so good camp due to some members hunting in the afternoon.

I hear what your saying, the best hunt in my life was in the afternoon. We usually only hunt the couple of afternoons late in the season. New club rule this year is hunting in the afternoon and some members dont understand why they arent as many ducks as usual. Talk about pissing in the wind
