"Heel"

Postby quakwacker » Wed Dec 13, 2006 5:52 pm

My dog is heeling pretty good from behind me but when I am facing him he goes to the wrong side.
I realize that it looks like the same side to him but what can I do to fix this problem and make him realize that he needs to face the same way that I am while at heel?

A heeling stick as well. I noticed once my pup realized what it was for he paid attention to it. Backward heeling helped my pup understand this as well.

I agree with Travis. Leash and with him sitting in front of you @ front finish, guide him to the heal position. He will learn it.

If he's learned sit means sit until told otherwise have him sit in front of you and walk a few feet away. Put your hand out for whichever side you want him to heel on. Give him a tug with the leash and say 'heel.' Guide him into position, sit him down and tell him he's the world's greatest dog. Repeat to each side a few times a day and gradually back up. Once you know he's got it, condition it with the collar. By the way, you'll be MUCH better off in the long run if you teach two-sided heeling.
