Postby Skeeter » Wed Jan 03, 2007 10:10 am

I am having a problem with my duck kill/miss ratio with my new Xtrema.....what choke are any of you using in your xtrema? I am currently using the modified......i started trying different brands of loads, like federal, remington, winchester, and now i am using kent....for all years past, i was shooting an 1187 and 870 with full chokes.....havent gone that route yet.....a few that own the gun had told me not too....

IC or LM. Modified with steel compares to full with lead.

I shoot the factory Beretta modified choke with 3" 1.25 ounce Kent #2 steel. Shooting cripples on the water at 25-30 yards the pattern appears to only be about 18" in diameter. You got to put it on them, but it kills when it connects.

We're doing our best to shoot only when a good shot is presented, probably 'cause I suck at pass shooting  This whole season I have shot like I've never picked up a shotgun before- something to do with follow through.....
My son shoots VERY well with his extrema and Improved choke. We're shooting a hodgepodge of 3" steel shot from 2's to 4's.

Try putting a velcro patch on your stock and another one on your cheek. You'll shoot better.

I just so happend to pattern mine and the best pellet count that I had was with the factory IM choke shooting a Win Drylok 3.5" #3 1 9/16oz. I think I had 130 some odd pellets in an 18in circle at about 35 yds.

For the record I also shot comparable shells with the results as follows: Win Expert(107 pellets), Remington Steelshot(99) and Kent Faststeel(87).

I pays to pattern your shotgun. 8)

Shoot the improved cylinder with heavy shot and that son of a gun will blow your mind.

I'll try it! Last time out my wife out shot me

Last year suicidal ducks would fly all the way from Alberta and buzz my blind just to end their misery. This year they have to find a different way out! Maybe pills or something like that, I can't hit 'em.

Is it alright to shoot steel in IM? Thought anything above M was not recommended.

Certain chokes and barrels have to be made of specific alloy to handle steel and full chokes. Older guns would bulge or blow apart when teh steel was forced down the barrel. Basically the pressure inside the barrel formed by the full choke tightning the pattern and compressing the gasses was greather than the strength of the barrel. Most modern guns (last 10-15yrs) are ok to shoot steel with a full choke. Hell look at the turkey chokes and nontoxic loads(different than plain steel but similar)
