Spinning Wing Decoys Outlawed?
Heard on New Orleans news that the Mojo's, Robo's, etc. were in fact outlawed. I have not confirmed this w/ any agency, but was wondering if anyone knew for sure. By the way, sorry it's been so long since I've posted anything---been between computers.
Spinning Wing Decoys Outlawed?
Welcome back Iceman. Are you competing in any competition calling contests this year?
Twirlies have been totally banned in Washington and Pennsylvania. These bans were based on hunter and department of wildlife input, and in part on the data from the first portion of the UC Davis study.
Here is a new blurb posted on David Corum's site about the Washington ban:
*********
WA State Adopts Ban On Electronic Decoys....
In a 6-2 vote, the WDFW Commission adopted a ban on waterfowl hunting with battery-powered or electronic decoys. Commission chairman Russ Cahill, who was among the six in favor of the ban, called it a "fair chase" issue. Cahill said many waterfowlers he heard from said use of the so-called "robotic" decoys "just increases the killing, not hunting participation." Other Commissioners expressed concern about increased harvest resulting in future restrictions on waterfowl hunting. Commissioners Kelly White and Will Roehl voted against the ban; Commissioner Fred Shiosaki was absent during that vote.
This adopted ban will include the ban of every single battery powered or electronic decoys, including Swimmers, Shakers, Quivers, etc.. PA was the first to place this ban.

Also, California has placed a ban on these devices for the first portion of the CA duck season, also based partly on the UC Davis data showing a 6 fold increase in ducks attracted into shooting range over twirlies in the first portion of duck season. The proposed wording from the California DFW web site is as follows, although I understand they are still playing with the wording as to whether it will effect shakers, etc.:
************
It is unlawful to use electronic or mechanically-operated spinning blade devices or spinning wing decoys when attempting to take waterfowl between the start of waterfowl season and December 1. For the purposes of this regulation, electronic or mechanically-operated spinning blade devices or spinning wing decoys include, but are not limited to, electronically or mechanically operated devices whose purpose is to attract waterfowl through the aid of an oscillating or other similar visual effect.
***********
There are several other states that are considering a ban, or severe restrictions on the use of twirlies. I am not aware that MS or LA has a ban under consideration, although there have been letters requesting a study on the state and federal level for Mississippi. The federal government would probably have to turn arkansas into an occupied federal enclave to get rid of all the twirlies over there.
I predict that if they are not outright banned by the feds, many states or the feds will justifiably limit the use of twirlies until the latter part of duck season in order to avoid greater additive mortality to the ducks.
I can hear the howls of "it ain't fair...." starting now from the gots-to-have-my-batteries crowd

This is great news. Ban the damned things then we can get back to hunting ducks the way they are supposed to be hunted. I say we start a campaign and write to our representatives at the state and federal level to support a ban. what you guys think?

Lets think about that, we live in a state where you can put a scope on your "PRIMATIVE" weapon that is now more like a rifle than a muzzleloader, hell you can even put a thing on your bow to keep it at full draw so you dont have to hold it. And you think they are going to outlaw a piece of plastic with batteries?

Well, the folks in PA, and WA never thought they would be banned. And the hunters in CA pushed hard not to have any limits on the dates they could be hunted with.
Twirlies will be banned, OR they will take days/ducks away from us. It is simply going to happen. It will start out west and in New England states and move east and south. Frankly, I would much rather them get rid of ducks on a stick than take away days I could be having fun.
