My Dad, my brother, and I went after Merriam's in South Dakota on the open prairie and we all killed 2 birds in a day and a half. Not as pretty as the Black Hills, but as many or more birds. I would recommend that you go to South Dakota to get your bird. I'll get the name of the outfiiter of who we hunted with a send it to you.

I drove 23 hours to South Dakota and hunted about 8 or 9 years ago, and my buddy and I both killed one and drove back the following day. Never seen so many Turkeys in my life. We were twenty minutes from Gregory, SD. I killed a big Tom and Conner Taxidermy here in Jackson lost it.
This is no longer a vacation, this is a quest, a quest for fun---Chevy Chase.

I hunted with a fellow named Jesse Trueblood on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Jesse used to be the Conservation Officer for that area, so he has access to a lot of property. A friend and I both shot two nice marriams by the end of the second day. Since we still had a few days until our flight left and we were limited out in SD, he put us in touch with a guy who let us hunt his ranch in northern Nebraska for free (about 2-3 hours away). They also have a ton of prarrie dogs up there, so bring a rifle for something to do if you limit early. I can get his # if your interested in speaking with him.
Jesse has worked a lot with Ron Dube who is one of the top elk and sheep guides out of Wapiti, Wyoming.
