Force fetch question about hold

Postby Leak-Free » Wed Apr 25, 2007 8:05 pm

My dog does not want anything (paint roller, dumbell, glove, bumper) put in his mouth. Force fetch book doesn't address this problem. Finally built a table and hobbled him, was able to put a gloved finger in his mouth for a few seconds, going about this real slow. If it takes a month to get her done then thats what it's going to be. Anybody ever experience anything like this?

Yes I started trying the same with my dog the other day. At first she wanted the dumbell but then after I was making her hold it she didn't want it anymore.

This might not be the right way to do it, but I pinched my dog's ear until he opened his mouth then i stuck the bumper in and forced him to hold it. It worked really well for me.

After a couple sessions he got the idea.

Are you following a program or going without reference. If no reference, please find some either a book, DVD or someone who has FF.

Find a book, read it.

the ear pinch trick works. Who's method you following?

Your teaching a command, It doesn't matter what the dog wants, you need to get the point across that "hold" is not an option. In some cases you may need to tie a rope around its mouth to enforce hold, sort of like a chock collar. A simple tap under the chin works wonders when he tries to spit it out.

Did you guys read my original post? Force Fetch is the book, I can ear pinch and choke this dog down and he don't want noting to do with anything being put in his mouth. This ain't just "not going to let you do it". Kinda like that old bumper sticker "You will have to pry my dead hands off this gun" kinda of an attitude. When I say he don't want it, I mean he vehemently don't want it. I've heard all the stories about how easy it is and I think that is wonderful but my dog is just a " little different". Surely I'm not the first person to come across a situation like this. I'ts going to work out. He was even better today about the gloved fingers in his mouth than he was yesterday.
