Don't see why folks should get bent out of shape. If doing fun casting and fun preliminary blind work with a young dog is wrong, then I've been doing it wrong for a good while. I disagree with letting a pup be totally unsteady the first 6 months of his life and then bringing the hammer down on him. The amount of steadiness IMO depends on the pup. If he's lower enthusiasm, then don't try to steady him up. When introducing to water don't steady or even restrain them at all. If he's a fire breather then you'll bring in a staediness standard sooner first by holding him still and then with a lead.
DIB,I'd be careful of the "I can always take it out of them" philosophy. I'll bet there's many here who wish they'd gotten control earlier and still haven't "taken it out"successfully even years later.
How much and what you do depends on the pups attitude. If he is lower desire use marks and less steadiness. If he's a wild pup, do more fun OB and casting games to make him think.
Just my opinion-I could be wrong,
Bill

Damn it boy,
Why should Travis kick someone off the board for expressing a different opinion? I don't see anything wrong with what she said as the pup has according to the owner plenty of desire. I personally enjoy reading other folks opinions even if they are not from Smartworks. I own all volumes of Smartworks, Lardy,Attar, Farmer, Hillman, Spencer, the Carr tapes and others but still get more out of civilized debate of issues on the net. If Smartwork is the only way then all I'd have to do is just read it again. Problem is training ain't like that....as Lardy says "training is fluid" and thats why its fun. Dogs are individuals, and we need to adjust our approach for each dog.

i think a lot of people, especially people wif less expereince, confuse hyper activity and tail wagging, for true insane desire. Ive seen insane desire, and when you've seen it, you'll never misteak puppy enthusiam or even a driven dog for it. Most folks who think their dog is ramped up, are probably a little kennel blind.
ive only had one dog I ever steadied from jump street. She is truely insane on desire. So much Im in constant fear of her hurting herself. ive had a lot of driven dogs, but nothing ever close to this, I realized it early and have treated her different since day one. but for the most part, I see no reason to expect steadiness from day 1, and certainly not on a 13 week old PUPPY. At 13 weeks old, it ought to be fun, and instead of steadying or pretending to run blinds, Id be letting the feller chase live birds, learning about the world, and becoming a good citizen. travis

advice
Best thing you can do with your pup at this point has nothing to do with training. Take him to as many places and around as many people as you can. Let him meet dogs. Let him get in a boat. Let him meet the 4 wheeler, etc.
The training at this point is mostly extra.

I have kept my pup (6 months) steady from the start, sent on "back" as opposed to his name. I believe it has improved his marking. It also has hurt his drive a little bit. This has brought me to doing more "fun" work to increase his drive. All dogs are different and grasp different concepts in different ways.
Keeping it fun for the dog seems to keep my dog's drive up. You know your dog better than anyone else, ask for advice and apply what you feel your dog will respond best to. I am new to this and have found out that everyone has a different opinion on what is correct and what is wrong, what will make or break a dog.

wow, steadying a 14 week old pup is like giving a 9yo boy a box of rubbers, a "forty" and they keys to the car.....way too early. Let the pup be a pup and teach it to be a good canine citizen and member of the family, with a steady diet of marks and obedience.
I gradually steady all my dogs, yes it does build their desire, I've seen the results of that 'steady from the start' crap and want no part of it....for the record, you won't find a dog in my kennel who doesn't want to break....I wouldn't have it if they didn't want to. I've never been a fan of watching paint dry nor do I like to watch a dog walk/amble out to marks, I want to remove debris from my eyes every time my dog leaves the line. Heck, after the age of 9 or 10, I don't even care if they're steady or not, they've earned the right to break whenever the he!! they want to by that time. It does my heart proud to see my 12yo HRCH bitch calling fair catch on birds when I hunt her

well alrighty then........ I guess the teams have separated and we can proceed .......red rover red rover......
and huntergirl rampage hotty ....wow owowo .....that is cool !! .......well my 2 week old maniac pup that I have picked out of the litter because he knocked all the other pups of the nipple......(what is my weaknessl for agressive men?) who I am naming samson .....ironic that he spreading the towers .....showed me who is boss today by scratching the heck out of my nose.........he is going to give me a run for my money !! I can't contain him at 2 weeks...... geez louise.......I got real work cut out for me.......he ain't gonna be a mama's boy like his daddy is...... I am thinking about Moses's' Slap you right back Sampson........what do you boys think ??
Good post .....all around to help the poor guy out. I agree with a lot of it. Getting the dog acquainted with all the aspects - exposure I guess is a good word for different situations, building the pups confidence and ability to adapt to new situations. And like I said the pup isn't going to be steady every time.....and your not going to burn or beat the dog to steady........but you should be encouraging steadiness......and then throwing in some fast and furious free for all - fun bumpers to keep him pumped up. I think the majority of viewers would state this is a STANDARD in dog training. Do the work .......then get rewarded or pumped up !! . I always clue my dogs in for the difference between a mark and a fun bumper .....and I recommend the same for you......... yell "FUN" on a free for all....... state "Mark" when your throwing marks. You can of course name your own words, that is if Damn it Boy will let you. "Mark" the dog will soon learn that means .....stay and watch.....then go when your told. Yes, dogs are smart enough to figure this all out. Give a few sits....reminders after the bird leaves your hand.......the first few times..... You have to watch your dog and start learning for yourself what your dog needs.......read the dogs behavior .......it will tell you what you need to do. No party here is completely wrong except Damn it boy, nobody is going to exert any energy to visit him at his house ........ Each dog needs a different approach and most times its a little of both of these......some steady or some encouragement to go........ unless you have a bizzarro dog like Travis's ..... and of course adjust your training accordingly........we are assuming since you have purchased a dog and your first post seems very knowledgable that you are able to tell if your dog is presently a maniac .....or doing just fine...... Keep up the good work !!

and not sure if your interested in running hunt test.......but if you want to see what a dog is like that was never taught to sit still and mark until it was a year or so old........there will be some there !! All you have to do is watch and learn......... And you must ask yourself this important question.........which is more important to you.......that you can take your time to shoot a duck ......or how many ducks your going to miss cause your dog broke ....... My experience is that I can not STAND a dog that won't be steady......and I have always been able to make a dog go .....if your dog won't go.......you don't need to be training him.......and not going does not come from making a dog steady, if so........let me make this clear....... IT IS MY OPINION........that you did something way wrong if teaching steady keeps the dog to loose its complete drive or even style.
