Just bought the kids....

Postby Dutch Dog » Wed Jun 27, 2007 9:05 am

...a Remington 700 SPS .243 Youth model. Had to order it, so it should be here in about 2 days. I could have saved a little $$$ and bought one of them NEF break open guns, but I thought I'd get more mileage out of this one...plus I'm probably gonna shoot it a time or two myself. Now...what kinda scope should I get??? I'm thinking something in the $100-150 range. 3 x 9 x 40 most likely candidate.
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I'd go with a Nikon, what size I think depends on if you're primarily hunting fields or woods.

I hunt the thick woods mostly and don't hardly make shots over 75 yards, so I just use a cheap Redfield on a .270.

You got open sights on it?

I'd get a good scope, you'll replace the simmons or tasco in a few years. I think bushnell makes some cheaper glass that might be worth looking at

In my experience a 50mm is a little tall for kids, it was for mine anyway. That new cut out leuopold came out with on the 50mm is sweet but it has a sweet price.

I would go with a varx-1 3x9x40 and the only reason I say varx-1 is cause it is cheaper than the varix -2

did a little research if you will...seems as if some of the Nikon's have a little longer eye relief 3.6", which, with shorter arms (smaller child) could help out a bit. Plus helps to make sure the scope doesn't hit one of the kids when they shoot it.
