DU magazine

Postby gadwall2 » Mon Jan 20, 2003 2:12 pm

How many of yall read the DU mag that just came out last week? Was it me or did it feel like they were trying to cntradict what Delta Waterfowl has to say and discount the effectiveness of Delta programs.

I think DU is seeing how much support they have lost to DW and are really grasping.

Its really ashame to see this happen though. DU has done a lot to help ducks and duck populations. But, they made their bed and now have to lie in it.

I haven't read it yet, but I think the best thing that could ever happen to us would be for DU and DW to "bury the hatchet" and work together. Unfortunately, DW doesn't have much land to implement their research on a large scale basis. DU on the other hand has access to untold thousands of acres of key wetlands.

I think that the most important thing that we as hunters can do is quit being negative toward one org or another, and try to promote teamwork between the two. Just think how many more ducks could be produced if both orgs would work together for the common good. As long as there is widespread dissention between hunters, there's no way this common goal could ever be reached.

I don't know how to reach the common goal, it may not even be possible with the current management in BOTH orgs. But I do know that we as hunters should be the first step in that direction. We should let the organizations know that we are not happy with the lack of cooperation between the two orgs.

To me, DU is the most logical choice for DW to try to partner their ideas with. How likely is it that DW could partner with the federal gov't and ever get anything accomplished? This is why I get so upset when people spread false rumors about either camp. I think we are the first rung on the ladder to success.

Just my opinion, it may never happen.

Remember this now, The greater majority of duck breeding grounds is on privately owned land.
DW does not have to have DU for support, but does want them.

I don't know how to get them together. DW has tried, but did face opposition from DU. The two orgs don't hate each other by any means, but conflicting goals always leads to dissention in a partnership. And they both know this. There are a lot of DW students that work for DU. I think DU just has a control hang up.

DW's scientific reseach and DU's pockets would definitely make a strong partnership if a common ground could be found.

DW is about research, and science. They have in the past, and always will, train the majority of waterfowl biologists for DU and the FWS. DU is about habitat and appearence. Appearence is more important than fact. Sciencetists use logic and studies to develop ideals and therorys, and to implement programs. When that progress is stifled by concearns of appearence, it goes from sceiene to lip service. The 2 organizations work together when it benefits both yet they have to remain seprate entities to provide for their own mission statements.

Reading propganda from any organization about another organization is NOT the way to make a desiscion. Finding out the WHY'S and HOW'S and making your own choices is the way to go.

The artical du did bashing predator control several years ago was the thing that made me think about all this, and shift my support (and increase it to I might add) to delta waterfowl. I guess you could say i went from being a member, to an advocate. The more learning I did, the more I decided I had previously been sold a bill of good's.

The 2 org's need to keep their own missions seprate. travis

I'll start giving my money to DUCKSunlimited again when all of their donations go back to the DUCKS! Dont really give a damn about any woodpeckers or spotted mottled hyena birds. Delta Waterfowl gets my meager check every year now.

du is part of the problem not the solution. they are building refuges north of ms. and planting food which is holding the ducks up there longer than normal. i also herd they will run paddle wheels to keep water open for them.

paddle wheels?

Anybody else got any good ones. I hear that they also got them pretty Peabody ducks posing up there just to keep the excitement level up which in turn keeps the water stirred so it won't freeze.

Both DW and DU get my pitiful little check every year. Hey, any little bit helps, right? I am a bigger supporter of DW. But DU sends me those cool magazines every couple of months.

And while I am posting, who in the he!! is this lowduck character? I wish he would take that chip of his shoulder, before someone sticks it in his @ss

guys im not sure of paddle wheels and food plots, but ...

i have just recently been made aware that du is genetically engineering hen mallards to possess a "certain moral character" or lack there of if you will... i mean really isnt enough that they feed em, water em, paddle em, but now they are breeding whore mallard hens. if they figure out how to grow duck marijuana or budweiser we are screwed

we want see any more ducks they will all be hanging out at these du duck juke joints... well if you cant beat em join em!

this is all hear say of course, except the part about me joining them

DW or DU?

Postby Gann » Tue Jan 21, 2003 11:29 am

A wise man called me on the carpet one day in front of 30 or so people I work with. I was telling of a competitors downfall in my business and he stopped me in my tracks and asked, " do you know what you know or did you simply hear it from someone else?" Everyone gets twisted up about DU and DW whenever we have a bad season. I may not know much, but I KNOW ducks migrate when their food source has been consumed or covered by snow. For two years in a row we have not had any snow north of us and that's the problem!!! Golf course ponds and private refuges and DU and DW projects may be debateable but the fact is Mother Nature has hosed us two years in a row. If you know anything about ducks, you know that. Take it easy everyone and be thankfull for what we have. If you have to point a finger at an organization make sure you can take it off yourself first. For the guy that said DU sucks, you might want to research just a fuzz and get your facts right before you spew nonsense! Any organization working for the ducks is better than none! So remember, before you spread hear say, ask yourself do you know because you know or did you just hear it somewhere?

Here, Here, Travis...I agree, I agree because I did the research to see who did what. DU gets my token $25 now. DW get my SUPPORT, financial and otherwise. Get DU back on the side of Science and hunters, and I'll take another look....
