Hunting Reports for 1/24/03

Postby lefthorn » Fri Jan 24, 2003 9:12 am

Just wondering if anyone went today and how things were. I am going tomorrow, regardless of ice thickness, duk numbers, etc. I think it will be good if you are in the right spot. Hopefully I will be  . Post up, good, bad, whatever. Just want to hear whats going on(especially south delta). Thanks and I hope the end of the season ends with a BANG for everyone!! :D

Lefthorn - I am going regardless of the ice too. I hope we can find where the ducks want to be. Any suggestions about boating through the ice? Hope your day tomorrow is filled with greenheads!

No suggestions about boating through ice. I am walking in to the greentrees, hopefully wont be walking on water  . I think I can get em tomorrow if only I can keep the hole open long enough. Good luck to you too!

Didn't fire a shot. Watched 600-700 ducks roost in this spot yesterday. Thought they would keep a hole open but they must have left during the night. Didn't even see a duck til 7:30.

5000 ducks in this hole this morning at 6.00 am. Put boat in and ducks got up. Didn't come back. Dammit.

Watched geese landing in the south end of my hole until I just couldn't stand it. Figured I'd mosey on down and get 'em when they came back. Guess what.... no open water! They were landing on ice! Walked up on one that I thought was frozen in. Got about 15 yds away, put my gun down, picked up a stick and threw it at him, but missed. I was tring to get him up so I wouldn't have to break ice to get him... Went looking for another stick, and he got up and flew off!!! Just as well... my safety got wet somewhere this a.m., and had to thaw it out with a cigarette lighter!! 2 more days to kill a nice duck.... DANG!

Went Friday am & didn't have ice (wind & 12 ft water) got to hunt in what is usually one of the better holes. Saw good numbers of gads & some mallards. Four guns (2 boats) picked up six birds total. I managed a nice drake woodie & a hen gadwal. This was my 1st hunt on public land this year & I remember now why. It sure is agravating when ducks are just one more swing away from landing to hear another group shoot & watch em rocket back skyward. Did get to hunt with a couple of guys from vardaman who were real nice though. All in all enjoyed it.
