.45-70's....Legal for Primative Weapons?

Postby bucks n beaks » Thu Oct 04, 2007 11:59 am

I just want to be sure that it is legal to use a .45-70 rifle during "muzzleloader" season. Just let me know.

It is, but it has to be a replica.......the H and R single shots are legal if that is what you have.

I got into a discussion with a guy at camp the other day.. He read the rule that the cartridge had to be made before 1900 and I said it was the action. Guess I was right.. He was saying that a 44 mag would not be legal cause it is a modern cartrige. My understanding was any caliber over 38 is fine as long as the action of the gun is pre 1900.

You are legal with that gun.. Just out of curiosity have you bought the gun yet.. If not you may want to look at the Handi in 444 Marlin.. They have a little better balistics than the 45-70

444M has a little less recoil than the 45-70, but shoots flatter.

Haven't bought it yet. Going to pick it up on Sat. for my dad's birthday. He's been wanting a new in-line ML to replace his ole cap and ball. I figure, hell if it's legal in MS, why not go with the .45-70?

You ever wanted a new shiny bike and got a scooter? Remember the dis-appointment?? Your dad wants a new in-line....I'd get him a new in-line. What if he hunts somewhere else that doesn't allow the 45-70? What if Mississippi changes the law sometime soon?
It's better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

Haven't thought about that. Maybe, just maybe, he'd use his ole cap and ball. Now there's an idea. Not to be a smart booty or anything, but until the rules do change, go with what you can.

Get you some Hornaday Lever Evolution bullets in 45-70 in 325 grain. They shoot alot flatter than the others and they really do the job. They are about $27 something at Academy in Jackson.
