Black Coyote

Postby Wingman » Fri Nov 02, 2007 10:55 am

Have you ever seen one?

I've seen two, both very dark, not necessarily jet black, but with white blaze on their chest.

I saw one back in 1998, I think it was. Saw the other yesterday, dead in the road near Morgan City. I would post pics but they are pretty nasty.

I am told (take it for what it's worth) that the black coloration is a characteristic trait found when coyotes cross with red wolves.

I've only seen one a couple of years ago on our place. To me it didn't look like it was eat up with the mange like most around there do.

My cousin killed one in panhandle Florida 10 or so years ago and had it mounted. We kept it in the living room of our mobile home during college. Made for an interesting conversation piece.

I killed one a couple of years ago behind my house. It was a female. I always figured it was where they crossed with wild dogs and got the coloration. I'll try to find the pics and post them.

There is one out at a place I deer hunt that we see a few times a year. Hasn't made it into bow range or in my crosshairs yet.

Do ya'll remember about 8 years or so ago that the CL ran an article about a Red Wolf that was killed around Bay Springs?
I saw the article tacked onto a wall in an oilfield office and the pictures were of a wolf with all dark black fur.
Could be a cross, maybe.

Melanistic coyotes occur naturally. They are most common in the eastern states. It's a recessive gene that makes them that way.
