Black Coyote
Have you ever seen one?
I've seen two, both very dark, not necessarily jet black, but with white blaze on their chest.
I saw one back in 1998, I think it was. Saw the other yesterday, dead in the road near Morgan City. I would post pics but they are pretty nasty.
I am told (take it for what it's worth) that the black coloration is a characteristic trait found when coyotes cross with red wolves.

I've only seen one a couple of years ago on our place. To me it didn't look like it was eat up with the mange like most around there do.

Could be a cross, maybe.
Melanistic coyotes occur naturally. They are most common in the eastern states. It's a recessive gene that makes them that way.
